A novel zwitterion named bethanechol chloride (BTCC) was introduced to simultaneously stabilize a Pb-I framework and passivate defects for efficient inverted perovskite solar cells. The BTCC-assisted device yielded an elevated power conversion efficiency of 20.45% with an open-circuit voltage of 1.14 V.

Tagging RNAs with fluorogenic aptamers has enabled imaging of transcripts in living cells, thereby revealing novel aspects of RNA metabolism and dynamics. While a diverse set of fluorogenic aptamers has been developed, a new generation of aptamers are beginning to exploit the ring-opening of spirocyclic rhodamine dyes to achieve robust performance in live mammalian cells. These fluorophores have two chemical states: a colorless, cell-permeable spirocyclic state and a fluorescent zwitterionic state.

Nowadays, nucleic acid derivatives capable of modulating gene expression at the RNA level have gained widespread recognition as promising therapeutic agents. A suitable degree of biological stability of oligonucleotide therapeutics is required for in vivo application; this can be most expeditiously achieved by the chemical modification of the internucleotidic phosphate group, which may also affect their cellular uptake, tissue distribution and pharmacokinetics. Our group has previously developed a strategy for the chemical modification of the phosphate group via the Staudinger reaction on a solid phase of the intermediate dinucleoside phosphite triester and a range of, preferably, electron deficient organic azides such as sulfonyl azides during automated solid-phase DNA synthesis according to the conventional β-cyanoethyl phosphoramidite scheme.

Antifouling zwitterionic materials have extensive applications in the biomedical field. This study designed and successfully synthesized a novel poly(carboxybetaine) diacrylate (PCBDA) via cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-methyl-2-oxazine, chain modification by the Michael reaction, and chain end transformation to acrylate. The cross-linker was obtained with a tunable molecular weight.

In this study, we worked at the CCSD/aug-cc-pVTZ level to obtain the conformers of glycine in its neutral and zwitterionic forms in the gas and water phases. We then computed the NMR properties (spin-spin coupling constants and nuclear magnetic shieldings) at the SOPPA/aug-cc-pVTZ-J level. We attempt to elucidate the apparent discrepancy arising from two previous works by Valverde et al.

Hydrogel indicators promise to monitor food spoilage, but their poor mechanics can cause defects in transport. Herein, a novel zwitterionic double network (DN) hydrogel was developed by polymerizing arylamide and sulfobetaine methacrylate in an alginate-Ca system. This hydrogel exhibited enhanced mechanical properties, including a maximum 2087 % breaking elongation and 135 ± 12 kJ/m toughness, significantly outperforming the current zwitterionic DN hydrogels, which typically exhibit less than 1800 % breaking elongation, capable of supporting 150 g-136 times its own weight.
