Two new spiroindolinonaphthoxazine derivatives with an electron-accepting styrylquinolizinium or styrylcoralyne unit, respectively, were synthesized, and the influence of such an arylvinyl substituent on the chemical and photochemical properties of the compounds was investigated. Specifically, these spirooxazines turned out to be resistant towards the photoinduced merocyanine formation, and the irradiation with light mainly led to photodegradation of the substrates. However, it was shown by colorimetric and fluorimetric screening assays as well as by detailed NMR spectroscopic and mass spectrometric studies that the addition of particular metal ions (Cu, Fe, and to a certain extent Hg) initially induced a ring-opening reaction that was irreversibly followed by a fast ring closure-deprotonation-oxidation sequence to give styryl-substituted naphthoxazole derivatives as the products quantitatively. For the quinolizinium-substituted spirooxazine derivative, the formation of the respective oxidation product caused the development of a broad absorption band between 425 nm and 500 nm and a new emission band at λ = 628 nm, so that it may be employed as a selective chemosensor or chemodosimeter for the colorimetric and fluorimetric detection of Cu and Fe.

Oxazolidine is a new category of stimuli-chromic compounds that has unique intelligent behaviors such as halochromism, hydrochromism, solvatochromism, and ionochromism, all of which have potential applications for designing and constructing chemosensors by using functionalized-polymer nanocarriers. Here, the poly(MMA--HEMA) based nanoparticles were synthesized by emulsion copolymerizing methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in different copolymer compositions. The poly(MMA--HEMA) based nanoparticles were modified physically with tertiary amine-functionalized oxazolidine (as an intelligent pH-responsive organic dye) to prepare halochromic latex nanoparticles.

Hydrazine (NH) and hydrogen sulfide (HS) are environmental contaminants that adversely affect human health. Fluorescence-based detection methods for these analytes utilize their nucleophilicity and reducing ability. Therefore, fluorescent sensors capable of detecting and distinguishing hydrazine and HS are highly beneficial.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has antimicrobial properties and is also known to stimulate the immune system. These properties could be useful for the development of a novel therapeutic or preventive strategy against respiratory infections in the upper respiratory tract (URT) such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) without inducing an immune overreaction. This study investigated the cellular responses of polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) after exposure to CAP in a three-dimensional (3D) model of the URT.

Coumarin compounds have heterocyclic core with different properties such as high quantum yields, broad Stokes shifts, and superior photophysical and biological activity. It is known that fluorescence properties increase with increased intramolecular charge transfer in systems where electron-withdrawing or donor groups are attached to different positions of the coumarin compound. When these compounds interact with analytes in the environment, the analytes in the environment can be detected by quenching or increasing fluorescence.

Water contaminated with chromium (Cr) poses significant risks to public health and the environment, necessitating reliable detection techniques. This review study uniquely provides a comprehensive analysis of optical methods for detecting Cr pollution in water, focusing on both reagent-based and reagentless approaches, as well as various sensing platforms. Unlike existing reviews that primarily focus on electrochemical and colorimetric/fluorimetric methods, this work highlights the untapped potential of optical technologies, such as colorimetry, SPR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and more, in detecting distinct Cr species, including reagent and reagentless based approaches.
