Schizophrenia patients are at higher risk of engaging in violent behavior than the general population. Schizophrenia is also regarded as a highly heritable disorder. This study aimed to analyze genome-wide the effect of SNPs on violence in schizophrenia. We recruited 205 subjects between the age of 18-75 from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), who had a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. We recorded physical, verbal and lifetime violence scores indicating any violent actions to inflict pain, bodily harm, or death on another individual from the standardized scale, Modified Overt Aggression Scale (MOAS). We genotyped each participant's DNA using the Illumina Omni 2.5, and the SNPs were analyzed using the whole genome analysis tool-set, PLINK. We probed for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) correlated with violence in schizophrenia patients. We found one SNP (rs2188177) on chromosome 7 which showed a trend for association with physical violence (p = 7.80E-06). This study is the first of its kind to investigate genome-wide, the polymorphisms associated with violence in schizophrenia. The findings of this study may promote collaborative efforts to understand the genetic basis of violent behavior in psychosis.
Introduction/background: Aggression and violence are common problems in healthcare settings and affects both patients and healthcare staff. The Dynamic Appraisal of Situational Aggression (DASA) is an assessment tool to guide assessment for short term risk in inpatient settings. There have been no large-scale studies examining the performance of the DASA across different clinical settings.
Introduction: It has been shown that public stigma towards people with schizophrenia hinders their psychosocial integration. Public stigma expresses itself through lexical labels used in the print media and social networks, heightening the internalization of stigma in this population, a phenomenon known as internalised stigma or self-stigma. This paper analyses the diffusion in the mass media of two dimensions of stigma: public stigma and self-stigma.

Studies about violence by women with severe mental disorders are rare. The aim of this paper is to analyse the sample of women diagnosed with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders (SSD) from the EU-VIORMED study who had offended violently and were admitted to forensic facilities (cases), and compare them to women with SSD who never exhibited violent behaviour (controls). Cases and controls matched for age and diagnosis were compared for sociodemographic, clinical, neuropsychological, and treatment-related characteristics using a standardised assessment.
Since 2015, Residencies for Execution of Security Measures (REMS) in Italy have treated dangerous offenders acquitted for mental disorders, primarily those with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD) and personality disorders (PD).
The study analyzed data from 528 REMS patients, revealing that the PD group had more females and substance abuse issues, while the SSD group often involved serious offenses like homicide.
Findings suggest that patients with PD show more violent behavior in REMS, while SSD patients are treated with higher doses and combinations of antipsychotics, highlighting the need for tailored treatment approaches.
