The Inca and their immediate predecessors provide an exceptional model of how to create high-altitude functional environments that sustainably feed people with a diversity of crops, whilst mitigating erosion, protecting forestry and maintaining soil fertility without the need for large-scale burning. A comparison is provided here of landscape practices and impacts prior to and after the Inca, derived from a unique 4200-year sedimentary record recovered from Laguna Marcacocha, a small, environmentally sensitive lake located at the heart of the Inca Empire. By examining ten selected proxies of environmental change, a rare window is opened on the past, helping to reveal how resilient watershed management and sustainable, climate-smart agriculture were achieved.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent studies show that certain bacterial insertion sequences utilize a special RNA (Bridge RNA or Seek RNA) to target specific DNA sites for insertion.
  • This discovery could simplify the process of adding large DNA fragments at specific locations in the genome.
  • While the method has only been tested in bacteria and needs further development, it shows significant potential for future genome editing and engineering applications.

Purpose: This study proposes the Lamella Ostium Extent Mucosa (LOEM) system as a compact and user-friendly classification for endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), based on surgical bone extension and mucosal management, aiming to resolve inconsistencies in describing surgical techniques and extension levels, and to enhance comparability of outcomes in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).

Methods: LOEM uses a lettering system representing a specific topographical level: L identifies the lamellae, O the ostia, E the opening of the sinus walls, and M the mucosal approach. Eleven CRS surgical cases were independently evaluated by seven rhinologists following a Delphi method in two consecutive rounds.

Introduction: During the last decade, the complementary value of real-world data (through registries or medical records) and data from randomized clinical trials has been recognized as increasingly important. In the field of neuromodulation, only a few industry-independent nationwide neuromodulation registries are available. The interest in creating a European registry has increased but without a successful result.

Background: In the United States, e-cigarettes, or vapes, are the second most commonly used tobacco product. Despite abundant smartphone app-based cigarette cessation programs, there are few such programs for vaping and even fewer supporting data.

Objective: This exploratory, prospective, single-arm, remote cohort study of the Pivot vaping cessation program assessed enrollment and questionnaire completion rates, participant engagement and retention, changes in attitudes toward quitting vaping, changes in vaping behavior, and participant feedback.
