All fifteen patients with HLA-A*32:01 restricted vancomycin-induced DRESS, showed negative responses to dalbavancin however two showed cross-reactivity to teicoplanin and telavancin. Adjunctive diagnostic testing should be considered to detect potential cross-reactivity amongst glycopeptides.

Article Synopsis
  • Vancomycin is a key antibiotic for treating MRSA infections, but its overuse has led to increased bacterial resistance, prompting this study to find better alternatives.
  • The research analyzed data from 38 trials involving 6,281 patients, measuring clinical success rates and adverse reactions of various antibiotics, including linezolid and combinations of other drugs with vancomycin.
  • Results indicated that linezolid and certain drug combinations outperformed vancomycin in treating MRSA infections, showing higher success rates and lower resistance, while also highlighting the risks of more side effects with some treatments.

Therapeutic drug monitoring of glycopeptide antimicrobials: An overview of liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry methods.

J Mass Spectrom Adv Clin Lab

January 2024

Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Section, Central Laboratory of Analysis, IRCCS Istituto Giannina Gaslini, 16147 Genoa, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is a crucial tool for ensuring drug safety and effectiveness by tracking the concentration of medications in blood or plasma.
  • TDM, when paired with real-time dosage adjustments, plays an essential role in managing glycopeptide antimicrobial therapies, which require a good grasp of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
  • Liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is the preferred method for accurately measuring antibiotic levels, providing a detailed analysis for several glycopeptide antibiotics including vancomycin and teicoplanin.

Resistance to Critical Important Antibacterials in Strains of Veterinary Origin.

Antibiotics (Basel)

December 2022

Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Unit, Department of Veterinary Sciences, University of Turin, Largo Braccini 2, 10095 Grugliasco, Italy.

Staphylococcal infections represent a challenge in companion animals and hospitalized patients. This study aimed to assess the resistance of isolates, against a broad panel of antibacterials, including exclusive to human medicine. A total of 40 were collected from clinical specimens of dogs ( = 31) and cats ( = 5).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the trends in serotypes and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of Streptococcus pneumoniae causing adult invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) to dalbavancin, telavancin, tedizolid, eravacycline, omadacycline and other comparator antibiotics from 2017-2020 following implementation of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-13) and during the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic.

Methods: During the study period, 237 S. pneumoniae isolates were collected from non-duplicate patients, covering 15.

Multicenter surveillance of antimicrobial susceptibility was performed for 235 vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREfm) isolates from 18 Taiwanese hospitals. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of eravacycline, omadacycline, lipoglycopeptides, and other comparator antibiotics were determined using the broth microdilution method. Nearly all isolates of VREfm were not susceptible to teicoplanin, dalbavancin, and telavancin, with susceptibility rates of 0.
