Based on the multimodal characterization of human red blood cells (RBCs), the link between the storage-related sequence of the nanoscale changes in RBC membranes in the relation to their biochemical profile as well as mechanical and functional properties was presented. On the background of the accumulation of RBCs waste products, programmed cell death and impaired rheological properties, progressive alterations in the RBC membranes including changes in their height and diameter as well as the in situ characterization of RBC-derived microparticles (RMPs) on the RBCs surface were presented. The advantage of atomic force microscopy (AFM) in RMPs visualization, even at the very early stage of vesiculation, was shown based on the results revealed by other reference techniques. The nanoscale characterization of RMPs was correlated with a decrease in cholesterol and triglycerides levels in the RBC membranes, proving the link between the lipids leakage from RBCs and the process of vesiculation.

During retinal visual processing, rod bipolar cells (RBC) transfer scotopic signals from rods to AII amacrine cells as second-order neurons. Elucidation of the RBC's excitation/inhibition is essential for understanding the visual signal transmission. Excitation mechanisms via mGluR6 and voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in the RBCs and GABAergic inhibitory synaptic inputs have been studied in previous studies.

Actin is an essential component of the cytoskeleton in every eukaryotic cell. Cytoplasmic β-and γ-actin are over 99% identical to each other at the protein level, but are encoded by different genes and play distinct roles in vivo. Blood cells, especially red blood cells (RBC), contain almost exclusively β-actin, and it has been generally assumed that this bias is dictated by unique suitability of β-actin for RBC cytoskeleton function due to its specific amino acid sequence.

Background: In the last decades, veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (V-A ECMO) has been gaining in popularity for intraoperative support during lung transplant (LT), being advocated for routinely use also in uncomplicated cases. Compared to off-pump strategy and, secondarily, to traditional cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), V-A ECMO seems to offer a better hemodynamic stability and oxygenation, while data regarding blood product transfusions, postoperative recovery, and mortality remain unclear. This systematic review and network meta-analysis aims to evaluate the comparative efficacy and safety of V-A ECMO and CPB as compared to OffPump strategy during LT.

The erythrocyte membrane is highly specialized with ∼one million anion exchanger-1 (AE1) per cell for rapid membrane permeation of HCO3-(aq), as most blood CO2(g) is carried in this hydrated anionic form. People with the GP.Mur blood type have more AE1 on their erythrocyte membrane, and they excrete CO2(g) more efficiently.

Background: VPS13A disease is an ultra-rare disorder caused by loss of function mutations in VPS13A characterized by striatal degeneration and by red blood cell (RBC) acanthocytosis. VPS13A is a bridge-like protein mediating lipid transfer at membrane contact sites.
Objectives: To assess the lipid composition of patient-derived RBCs.
