On 5 November 2015, the Samarco Fe ore mining operations released approximately 50 million cubic meters of mining waste into the environment, due to a dam collapse. Aiming at understanding the potential effects on the Doce River, different regions of the course of tailings were monitored using acute and chronic ecotoxicological tests with 4 species: Ceriodaphnia dubia, Daphnia similis, Danio rerio, and Vibrio fischeri. The results showed no acute toxicity for water column organisms. However, chronic toxicity was observed with the tests with the microcrustacean C. dubia, mainly related to the physical effects of the passage of flood wave and increased suspended solids, given that toxicity was reduced after filtering the samples. The results showed different magnitudes of impact among the upper, middle, and lower Doce River, with greater impact close to the dam failure area. Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how environmental and climate factors affect the spread of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in Brazil's Doce River basin, aiming to enhance future surveillance and control efforts.
  • It utilizes ecological niche modeling, analyzing 855 VL cases from 2001-2018 to predict current and future disease distributions based on various climatic and environmental variables.
  • Key findings indicate that human activities and climate change could increase VL suitable areas by 7% by 2041 and 12% by 2080, emphasizing the need for improved vector control initiatives in the region.

Eight years after the tailings dam collapse in Mariana, MG, Brazil, several aspects of this massive disaster are yet to be elucidated. Our goal was to investigate the impact of the mud flow on 16 fish species collected across 15 points from the Doce River, addressing 12 metal concentrations, tissue oxidative status (antioxidant enzymes and stress biomarkers), and histopathological analyses. The species Trachelyopterus striatulus, Prochilodus vimboides, Loricariichthys castaneus, Lophiosilurus alexandri, Hypostomus affinis, Hoplias intermedius were shown to be the most affected regarding the gills tissue integrity; Hypostomus affinis, Oligosarcus acutirostris, Lophiosilurus alexandri, Pygocentrus nattereri, Hoplosternum littorale, and Loricariichthys castaneus showed the highest levels of liver health.

Fish presence in tailraces is a remarkable management concern in operating hydroelectric power plants (HPP) in Brazilian rivers. Fish get blocked during upstream migration for spawning, and large shoals can last for days in the tailrace; however, the circumstances that attract fish throughout the year to this region are uncertain, especially during drought conditions. To unravel this uncertainty, we modeled the relationship between Pimelodus maculatus abundance and environmental and operational variables (N = 26) in monthly fishing campaigns at the Machadinho HPP (N = 18).

Laboratório de Processamento de Tecidos - LAPROTEC, Universidade Federal de São João Del-Rei, Campus Centro Oeste, Rua Sebastião Gonçalves Coelho, 400, Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, 35501-296, Brazil.

Fish may have different sensitivity to pollutants present in the water. We analyzed the liver histology, and P-gp expression in six species of fish from the Doce River basin. Fish were caught at six different points in the Doce River, and liver samples were taken for histological analysis.

Extensive Myocardial Calcification Rapidly Progressing After Orthotopic Liver Transplantation.

JACC Case Rep

November 2024

Division of Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery, Department of Surgery, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, USA.

Orthotopic liver transplantation has been rarely associated with myocardial calcification; no prior cases of asymptomatic calcification have been documented. We present the unique finding of asymptomatic myocardial calcification following orthotopic liver transplantation.
