Cellular glycosylation is crucial for cell recognition, signal transduction, and the development of various diseases, especially in tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. Current glycosylation profiling methods normally involve laborious sample processing and labeling and lack in-situ quantitative analysis. Here, we present a direct optical method to investigate and quantify the glycan expression on single cells based on lectin-glycan kinetic quantification with plasmonic imaging.

Lectins are produced in almost all life forms, can interact with targets (glycans) in a cross-kingdom manner and have served as valuable tools for studying glycobiology. Previously, a bacterial lectin, named Streptomyces hemagglutinin (SHA), was found to agglutinate human type B erythrocytes. However, the binding of SHA to mammalian cell types other than human erythrocytes has not been explored.

The effectiveness of poultry vaccination in preventing the transmission of highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses (AIVs) has been debated, and its impact on wild birds remains uncertain. Here, we reconstruct the movements of H5 subtype AIV lineages among vaccinated poultry, unvaccinated poultry, and wild birds, worldwide, from 1996 to 2023. We find that there is a time lag in viral transmission among different host populations and that movements from wild birds to unvaccinated poultry were more frequent than those from wild birds to vaccinated poultry.

Cold agglutinin syndrome is a form of acquired hemolytic anemia that typically arises from underlying conditions, such as infections, autoimmune disorders or lymphoid malignancies. The majority of patients remain asymptomatic and are diagnosed with anemia through routine complete blood count (CBC) testing. The present study describes the case of a male patient in his 50s who sought a second opinion at the authors' clinic due to newly detected anemia.

Background: Sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-like lectins (SIGLECs) are widely expressed on immune cell surfaces, play an important role in maintaining immune homeostasis and regulating inflammatory responses, and are increasingly emerging as potential targets for tumor immunotherapy. However, the expression profile and crucial role of SIGLEC11 in gastric cancer (GC) remain unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the prognostic relevance of SIGLEC11 expression and its role in the immune microenvironment in patients with GC.
