Few studies have considered the effect of co-occurring heavy metals on plant accumulation of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs), and less is known about the role of intermolecular interactions. This study investigated the molecular mechanisms of Cu/Zn effects on hydroponic uptake of four deuterated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs-) by spinach ( L.). Both solubility enhancement experiment and quantum mechanical calculations demonstrated the existence of [PAH-Cu(HO)] and [2·PAH-Cu(HO)] via cation-π interactions when Cu concentration was ≤100 μmol/L. Notably, PAH- concentrations in both roots and shoots increased significantly with Cu concentration. This was because the formation of phytoavailable PAH-Cu complexes decreased PAH- hydrophobicity and consequently decreased their sorption onto dissolved organic carbon (DOC, i.e., root exudates), thereby increasing phytoavailable concentrations and uptake of PAHs-. X-ray absorption near-edge structure analysis showed that PAH-Cu complexes could enter defective spinach roots via apoplastic pathway. However, Zn and PAHs- cannot form the cation-π interactions because of the high desolvation penalty of Zn. Actually, Zn decreased the spinach uptake of PAHs- due to the increase of DOC induced by Zn. This work provides molecular insights into how metals could selectively affect the plant uptake of HOCs and highlights the importance of considering the HOC phytoavailability with coexisting metals.

Accurate discrimination of complicated glycosaminoglycans is a challenging but meaningful task for ensuring their safe use in clinics. With the purpose of reducing the production cost of sensor arrays for glycosaminoglycans, three fluorescence turn-on sensors named , , and were readily synthesized by simple alkylation of the pyridyl units of the π-extended AIEgen, namely, tetra-(4-pyridylphenyl) ethylene. The designed sensors are cross-reactive toward tested glycosaminoglycans including heparin, chondroitin sulfate, hyaluronic acid, and dextran sulfate, whose mechanism could be ascribed to the multivalent electrostatic, CH···π, and hydrophobic interactions between the sensors and different glycosaminoglycans to form corresponding fluorescent aggregates.

In plasma, the zymogens factor XII (FXII) and prekallikrein reciprocally convert each other to the proteases FXIIa and plasma kallikrein (PKa). PKa cleaves high-molecular-weight kininogen (HK) to release bradykinin, which contributes to regulation of blood vessel tone and permeability. Plasma FXII is normally in a "closed" conformation that limits activation by PKa.

Designing Health Recommender Systems to Promote Health Equity: A Socioecological Perspective.

J Med Internet Res

Department High-Tech Business and Entrepreneurship Section, Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems, University of Twente, Enschede, Overijssel, Netherlands.

Health recommender systems (HRS) have the capability to improve human-centered care and prevention by personalizing content, such as health interventions or health information. HRS, an emerging and developing field, can play a unique role in the digital health field as they can offer relevant recommendations, not only based on what users themselves prefer and may be receptive to, but also using data about wider spheres of influence over human behavior, including peers, families, communities, and societies. We identify and discuss how HRS could play a unique role in decreasing health inequities.

The aggregation and accumulation of amyloid β 42 (Aβ42) peptides on the surface of brain cells is associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD); however, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. Herein, we used a unique brain-mimetic open system that continuously flows Aβ42 solution to analyze the initial aggregation and adsorptive nature of Aβ42 at physiological concentrations on the lipid membrane. The open system accelerated the adsorption and dimerization kinetics.
