Influence of calcium sources on the bio-mineralization behavior of and induced microbiologically influenced corrosion inhibition.

Front Microbiol

February 2025

Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Materials Genome Engineering, Institute for Advanced Materials and Technology, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing, China.

The influence of different calcium sources on the mineralization behavior of and their roles in microbiologically influenced corrosion inhibition (MICI) of Q235 carbon steel were investigated. Calcium lactate, calcium nitrate, and calcium L-aspartate were selected as alternative calcium sources to assess their effects on bacterial growth, carbonate deposition, and corrosion resistance. exhibited stable growth in all tested media, with the pH exceeding 8 after 14 days, promoting carbonate precipitation.

Additive manufacturing of water-soluble 3D micro molds for complex-shaped lipid microparticles.

Nat Commun

Microsystems Laboratory (EPFL-STI-IEM-LMIS1) Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), 1015, Lausanne, Switzerland.

Micro and nanoparticles made from polymers, metals, ceramics, and lipids are crucial for biomedical devices, energy storage, and electronics. Traditional fabrication methods like grinding, milling, and emulsification result in monolithic shapes and heterogeneous sizes. To improve shape control, techniques such as photolithography, inkjet printing (IJP), and molding are employed.

Optimizing nitrogen (N) sources has the potential to improve wheat tillering, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE), and grain yield, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study hypothesizes that combining specific N sources can increase zeatin riboside + zeatin (ZR + ZT) content in tiller nodes and maintain a higher ZR + ZT/gibberellin A7 (GA) ratio, thereby promoting tiller development, enhancing NUE, and increasing yield. The effects of N source treatments on two wheat cultivars, the multi-spike Shannong 28 (SN28) and the large-spike Tainong 18 (TN18), were investigated.

Aiming toward a novel, noninvasive technique, with a real-time potential application in the monitoring of the complexation of steroidal neuromuscular blocker drugs Vecuronium () and Rocuronium () with sugammadex (, medication for the reversal of neuromuscular blockade induced by or in general anesthesia), we developed proof-of-principle methodology based on surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Silver nanoparticles prepared by the reduction of silver ions with hydroxylamine hydrochloride were used as SERS-active substrates, additionally aggregated with calcium nitrate as needed. The and SERS spectra were obtained within the biorelevant 5 × 10-1 × 10 M range, as well as the SERS of , though the latter was observed only in the presence of the aggregating agent.

Non-ionic surfactant self-assembly in calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and related salts.

Soft Matter

February 2025

School of Chemistry and University of Sydney Nano Institute, The University of Sydney, Sydney, NSW, 2006, Australia.

Self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules can take place in extremely concentrated salt solutions, such as inorganic molten salt hydrates or hydrous melts. The intermolecular interactions governing the organization of amphiphilic molecules under such extreme conditions are not yet fully understood. In this study, we investigated the specific effects of ions on the self-assembly of the non-ionic surfactant CH(OCHCH)OH (CE) under extreme salt concentrations, using calcium nitrate tetrahydrate as a reference.
