Very preterm infants (VPIs) often experience extrauterine growth failure. Therefore, aggressive nutritional management of VPIs is recommended with the goal of achieving the postnatal growth of an equivalent fetus. However, VPIs frequently present postnatal length growth restriction at term-corrected age that remains lower than the standard weight and have greater fat mass and lower lean and bone mass than term-born infants.

Signs of virilization, such as clitoromegaly, labio-scrotal fusion, and urogenital sinus may be observed in females with 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) and other rare virilizing forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). This makes sex determination difficult, and multiple reconstructive surgeries in the postnatal period may be required. As 21-OHD is an autosomal recessive disease, the chance of any child being affected is one in four and so only one in eight will be an affected female.

Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) is a condition that arises when a neonate presents with abnormalities resulting from Zika virus infection during gestation. While microcephaly is a prominent feature of the syndrome, other forms of brain damage are also observed, often accompanied by significant neurological complications. It is therefore essential to investigate the long-term effects of CZS, with special attention to sex differences, particularly concerning hippocampal function, given its vulnerability to viral infections.

Early postnatal growth following extremely preterm birth may have long-term effects on growth, eating behaviours and health. Background/Objectives: To determine whether growth to age two years is conditional on growth in the NICU, a conditional growth analysis was performed in a cohort of 330 extremely low-birthweight (ELBW; birthweight < 1000 g) participants in the ProVIDe trial who were followed-up at 2 years corrected age (CA); Methods: We used z-score change for weight, length and head circumference from 36 weeks post-menstrual age to 2 years CA as the end-point-adjusted for birth z-score and z-score change from birth to 36 weeks. Growth and body composition were assessed using bioimpedance analysis.
