A cyclophane is reported incorporating two units of a heptagon-containing extended polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) analogue of the hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene (HBC) moiety (hept-HBC). This cyclophane represents a new class of macrocyclic structures that incorporate for the first time seven-membered rings within extended PAH frameworks. The saddle curvature of the hept-HBC macrocycle units induced by the presence of the nonhexagonal ring along with the flexible alkyl linkers generate a cavity with shape complementarity and appropriate size to enable π interactions with fullerenes. Therefore, the cyclophane forms host-guest complexes with C and C with estimated binding constants of K =420±2 m and K =(6.49±0.23)×10 m , respectively. As a result, the macrocycle can selectively bind C in the presence of an excess of a mixture of C and C .

Orthogonal self-assembly represents a useful methodology to construct supramolecular polymers with AA- and AB-type monomers, as commonly used for covalently linked polymers. So far, the design of such monomers has relied heavily on three-dimensional macrocycles, and the use of two-dimensional shape-persistent macrocycles for this purpose remains rather rare. Here, we demonstrate a dimerization motif based on a hydrogen-bonded macrocycle that can be effectively applied to form orthogonal supramolecular polymers.

Macrocyclic supramolecular materials play an important role in encapsulating anticancer drugs to improve the anticancer efficiency and reduce the toxicity to normal tissues through host-guest interactions. Among them, pillar[n]arenes, as an emerging class of supramolecular macrocyclic compounds, have attracted increasing attention in drug delivery and drug-controlled release due to their high biocompatibility, excellent host-guest chemistry, and simplicity of modification. In this review, we summarize the research progress of pillar[n]arene-based supramolecular nanodrug delivery systems (SNDs) in recent years in the field of tumor therapy, including drug-controlled release, imaging diagnostics and therapeutic modalities.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a versatile chemical widely used in various industries. The traditional anthraquinone method for H2O2 synthesis has environmental and safety concerns due to the use of organic solvents and hazardous by-products. The direct synthesis of H2O2 from H2 and O2 poses risks of flammability and explosion.

The widespread use of gadolinium-based contrast agents for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in recent decades has led to a growing demand for Gd and raised environmental concerns due to their direct discharge into wastewater systems. In response, we developed an electrochemical filtration method to recover Gd from patient urine following contrast-enhanced MRI. This method involves modifying a conventional vacuum filtration apparatus by introducing electrodes into the filter membrane, creating a strong electric field of ∼5 kV/m and a steep three-zone pH gradient within the filter membrane.

mRNA display is an effective tool to identify high-affinity macrocyclic binders for challenging protein targets. The success of an mRNA display selection is dependent on generating highly diverse libraries with trillions of peptides. While translation elongation can canonically accommodate the 61 proteinogenic triplet codons, translation initiation is restricted to the native start codon AUG.
