The dynamics of anisotropic nano- to micro scale colloidal particles in confined environments, either near neighboring particles or boundaries, is relevant to a wide range of applications. We utilized Brownian dynamics simulations to predict the translational and rotational fluctuations of a Janus sphere with a cap of nonmatching density near a boundary. The presence of the cap significantly impacted the rotational dynamics of the particle as a consequence of gravitational torque at experimentally relevant conditions. Gravitational torque dominated stochastic torque for a particle >1 μm in diameter and with a 20-nm-thick gold cap. Janus particles at these conditions sampled mostly cap-down or "quenched" orientations. Although the results summarized herein showed that particles of smaller diameter (<1 μm) with a thin gold coating (<5 nm) behave similarly to an isotropic particle, small increases in either particle diameter or coating thickness quenched the polar rotation of the particle. Histogram landscapes of the separation distance from the boundary and orientation observations of particles with larger diameters or thicker gold coatings were mostly populated with quenched configurations. Finally, the histogram landscapes were inverted to obtain the potential energy landscapes, providing a road map for experimental data to be interpreted.

The purpose was to answer what is the relationship between torques acting on the human body, how does the triceps calf muscle balance the weight of a tilted body and what is the foot's role in the titling body? Two research models were developed. Model 1 - the one-sided lever system consists of a flat bar with, an axis of rotation, used to determine the weight and torque at a given point on it. Model 2 - the two-sided lever system consists of a flat bar imitating a tilted body counteracted by the Achilles tendon, and a platform imitating a foot.

The robotic fish utilizes a bio-inspired undulatory propulsion system to achieve high swimming performance. However, significant roll motion has been observed at the head when the tail oscillates at certain frequencies, adversely affecting both perception accuracy and propulsion efficiency. In this paper, the roll torque acting on the robotic fish is theoretically analyzed and decomposed into gravitational, inertial, and hydrodynamic components.

We report a systematic study on the barrier-crossing dynamics of bottom-heavy self-propelled particles (SPPs) over a one-dimensional periodic potential landscape (), which is fabricated on a microgroove-patterned polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. From the measured steady-state probability density function (PDF) (;) of the SPPs with different self-propulsion forces , we find that the escape dynamics of slow-rotating SPPs over the periodic potential () can be well described by an activity-dependent potential (;) under the fixed angle approximation. A theoretical model is developed to include the effects of the gravitational-torque-induced alignment on the polar angle and the hydrodynamic wall alignment on the azimuthal angle as well as their influence on the self-propulsion speed .

Magnetic nano/microrotors are passive elements spinning around an axis due to an external rotating field while remaining confined to a plane. They have been used to date in different applications related to fluid mixing, drug delivery, or biomedicine. Here we realize an active version of a magnetic microgyroscope which is simultaneously driven by a photoactivated catalytic reaction and a rotating magnetic field.
