Purpose: To evaluate visual acuity (VA) and refractive status in patients with cataract and irregular astigmatism with a regular central component after phacoemulsification with implantation of a toric intraocular lens (IOL).

Methods: Patients with cataract associated with irregular astigmatism with a regular central component were enrolled. All patients underwent phacoemulsification and toric IOL implantation. Postoperative visual acuity, residual astigmatism, toric IOL rotation, higher-order aberration, and objective and subjective visual quality were measured 3 months after surgery.

Results: Twenty-three eyes were included in the study. The logMAR corrected and uncorrected distance visual acuity values were decreased at 3 months postoperatively (  <  0.005). The preoperative average corneal astigmatism and postoperative residual astigmatism were 1.15-6.97 D (1.99 ± 1.26 D) and 0-2.75 D (0.65 ± 0.57 D), respectively. The average IOL rotation was 3.17 ± 2.01°. Some objective indicators of visual quality, including the modulation transfer function (  <  0.05), Strehl ratio (  <  0.005), 100% VA (  <  0.005), 20% VA (  <  0.005), and 9% VA (  <  0.005), were significantly higher than the corresponding preoperative values. The objective scatter index (  <  0.005) was significantly lower than that before surgery. The postoperative VF-14 scale score was 83.99 ± 14.58.

Conclusion: Toric IOL implantation has a good corrective effect on certain specific types of corneal irregular astigmatism with cataract. This effect can be attributed to its ability to correct the regular component of irregular astigmatism. The indications for toric IOL implantation could be expanded to some extent, thereby bringing benefit to more patients.

Popliteal artery pseudoaneurysms are rare, especially from acupuncture-related trauma. We report a 67-year-old male with hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), who developed a popliteal pseudoaneurysm after acupuncture. Imaging confirmed the pseudoaneurysm and a 55 mm AAA.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a heterogeneous disease, influenced by both environmental and genetic factors. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the human genome may influence the risk of developing COPD and the response to treatment. We assessed the effects of gene polymorphism of inflammatory and immune-active factors and gene-environment interaction on risk of COPD in middle-aged and older Chinese individuals.

Background: Patients treated with RT and long-term androgen deprivation therapy (ltADT) for high-risk localized prostate cancer (HRLPC) with 1 high-risk factor (any of Gleason ≥8, PSA > 20 ng/mL, ≥cT3; "high-risk") have better outcomes than those with 2-3 factors and/or cN1 disease ("very high risk"). We evaluated whether this risk stratification could determine benefit from ltADT versus short-term (stADT).

Methods: The Intermediate Clinical Endpoints in Cancer of the Prostate (ICECaP) repository of randomized trials was queried to identify eligible patients and trials.

Notably, the C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 12/C-X-C Chemokine Receptor Type 4 (CXCL12/CXCR4) signalling pathway's activation is markedly increased in a mouse model of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA). Nonetheless, the precise contribution of this pathway to AAA development remains to be elucidated. The AAA mouse model was induced by local incubation with elastase and oral administration of β-aminopropionitrile.

Thiolation, a post-transcriptional modification catalyzed by Uba4-Urm1-Ncs2/Ncs6 pathway in three specific transfer RNAs (tRNAs), is conserved from yeast to humans and plays an important role in enhancing codon-anticodon interaction and translation efficiency. Yet, except for affecting effector secretion, its roles in plant pathogenic fungi are not fully understood. Here, we used Magnaporthe oryzae as a model system to illustrate the vital role of s2U34 modification on the appressorium-mediated virulence.
