Succinic acid is a "hot molecule" identified by United States Department of Energy as a substitute for petrochemicals with great scope for its production from biomass. It is used as an intermediate for the production of a huge variety of everyday consumer products with an addressable market share of billions of dollars. Succinic acid and its derivatives are mainly used as pharmaceuticals, adhesives, solvents, intermediates for polymer synthesis, and food additives. Succinic acid is commercially produced from petrochemicals and there is a deficiency of economically viable catalytic processes for its large-scale production from biomass. Recently, a lot of biochemical routes have been devised to enhance its production from biomass resources, but such processes are time-consuming and involve tedious separation procedures. Therefore, this Review focuses on metal-based and metal-free heterogeneous catalytic routes for the synthesis of succinic acid from biomass derived products. The presence of uniform channels, cavities, active sites of various strengths, and the unique surface structure of the heterogeneous catalysts are a few of the interesting features that promote their use in industrial processes.

Excessive intake of fructose has been widely reported to cause glycolipid metabolism disorders, and it is unclear whether long-term consumption of ice wine, a sweet wine with high sugar content, is beneficial for health. In this study, 6-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were divided into pure water, ice wine, fructose, fructose + succinic acid, fructose + malic acid and fructose + alcohol groups to study the effects and mechanisms of organic acids on glycolipid metabolism. The results indicated that long-term consumption of ice wine did not lead to disorders of glycolipid metabolism, and organic acids inhibited the negative effects of fructose and reduced hepatic fat synthesis by decreasing the mRNA expression of hepatic ACC1, SREBP-1c, and ChREBP-β, as well as controlling the protein expression of KHK-C.

The hydro/dicarboxylation of ethylene (CH) feedstock with CO to produce high-value carboxylic acids is an industrially relevant yet challenging reaction due to their extremely low reactivities. Herein, we present an effective strategy to synthesize propionic acid and succinic acid from a mixture of CO and CH catalyzed by high-energy water radiolysis. The process involves the generation of CO radical anions via the barrierless attachment of hydrated electrons to CO, facilitating an ambient, continuous carboxylation of CH with an efficiency of 81.

In this study, covalent octenyl succinic anhydride starch-soy protein- (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (OSAS-SP-EGCG) complexes were synthesized by HO/ ascorbic acid radical grafting method. Particle size, ζ-potential, Fourier transform infrared, and thermogravimetric results proved the formation of covalent OSAS-SP-EGCG complexes. The results of scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy confirmed that the particles of the covalent complexes (especially 1:4 complexes) were more uniformly distributed.

The effect of beef cattle (Angus vs. Simmental) feeds with various diet formulas on the production performance, blood biochemical indexes, beef quality, and rumen bacterial diversity were investigated. Corn silage, sorghum silage, and the mixture of corn silage and sorghum silage were used as experimental materials to compare the feeding effect of different proportions of feed.

Supramolecular polymers (SPs) based on the stacking of hydrogen-bonded rosettes are attracting increasing attention due to their potential applications as soft materials. However, a detailed description of the interactions that give rise to these one-dimensional architectures is still scarce in the literature. In this work, we use molecular dynamics to analyze in aqueous solution the stability of two SPs based on amino triazines (AT) and amino pyrimidines (AP) modified with a hydrophilic chain of succinic acid (-saH).
