Does vision extract absolute distance from vergence?

Since Kepler (1604) and Descartes (1637), 'vergence' (the angular rotation of the eyes) has been thought of as one of our most important absolute distance cues. But vergence has never been tested as an absolute distance cue divorced from obvious confounding cues such as binocular disparity. In this article, we control for these confounding cues for the first time by gradually manipulating vergence and find that observers fail to accurately judge distance from vergence. We consider several different interpretations of these results and argue that the most principled response to these results is to question the general effectiveness of vergence as an absolute distance cue. Given that other absolute distance cues (such as motion parallax and vertical disparities) are limited in application, this poses a real challenge to our contemporary understanding of visual scale.

Because of their resilience, Time-of-Flight (ToF) cameras are now essential components in scientific and industrial settings. This paper outlines the essential factors for modeling 3D ToF cameras, with specific emphasis on analyzing the phenomenon known as "wiggling". Through our investigation, we demonstrate that wiggling not only causes systematic errors in distance measurements, but also introduces periodic fluctuations in statistical measurement uncertainty, which compounds the dependence on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Lens-free on-chip microscopy (LFOCM) is a powerful computational imaging technology that combines high-throughput capabilities with cost efficiency. However, in LFOCM, the phase recovered by iterative phase retrieval techniques is generally wrapped into the range of -π to π, necessitating phase unwrapping to recover absolute phase distributions. Moreover, this unwrapping process is prone to errors, particularly in areas with large phase gradients or low spatial sampling, due to the absence of reliable initial guesses.

Changes in functional capacity of heart failure patients following a cardiac rehabilitation program.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program on functional capacity in patients with heart failure at a high-complexity hospital in the city of Cali during the period from 2017 to 2023.

Methods: A retrospective descriptive study that included 127 patients over 18 years of age diagnosed with heart failure, who completed 36 rehabilitation sessions with complete records of the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), anthropometric and physiological measurements at the beginning and end of the program. Categorical variables were summarized as absolute frequencies and percentages.
