Introduction: Ocular complications after spine surgery in prone position are very rare and are described centrally in elective surgeries with long duration. The most well-known ocular complications are vision loss and acute angle-closure glaucoma. To the best of our knowledge, anisocoria after prone spinal surgery has never been reported previously in literature.
Case Report: We present a very rare case of a transient harmless anisocoria in a 23-year-old otherwise healthy female patient, who underwent in the traditionally prone position lumbosacral spinal fractures stabilization and calcaneal fracture reduction and external fixation. We describe step by step the diagnosis algorithm and we discuss detaily the differential diagnosis of the unilaterally fixed and dilated pupil. Careful stepwise medical history and examination are mandatory to establish correct diagnosis and avoid unnecessary, expensive, and potentially hazardous or invasive diagnostic testing.
Conclusion: The wrong position during prone spine surgery can cause iris sphincter muscle tears and transient or permanent dilation of the affected pupil. Fixed dilated pupil is a permanent abnormality of the iris, causing irregular cosmetic appearance, especially in young females, and requires further conservative or surgical intervention. Positioning of the patient and duration of surgery should be taken into consideration both by spine surgeons and anesthesiologists.

This study investigates the gross morphological and morphometric characteristics of thoracic and lumbar intervertebral discs (IVDs) in guinea pigs, utilising micro-CT imaging and anatomical dissection. The findings reveal 13 thoracic and six lumbar IVDs were identified, with thoracic discs transitioning from rounded forms at T1-T3 to triangular and heart-shaped structures at T4-T13, while lumbar IVDs exhibited a consistently flattened heart shape. Morphometric analysis revealed statistically significant differences, with lumbar IVDs being larger in lateral and dorsoventral width, disc area, annulus fibrosus (AF) area and nucleus pulposus (NP) area, and ventral height compared to thoracic discs.

Traumatic burst fractures of the atlas occur with axial loading of the cervical spine. Many of these injuries can be treated by nonsurgical management with external orthosis; however, cases with transverse ligament disruption or significant C1 lateral mass displacement require internal reduction and fixation. In patients with poor bone quality in the setting of osteoporosis or chronic illness, atlanto-axial fixation and reduction of the fracture can be a challenge, necessitating extension of fusion to the occiput, which significantly limits the range of motion.

Background: Maternal nutrition profoundly influences offspring health, impacting both prenatal and early postnatal development. Previous studies have demonstrated that maternal dietary habits can affect key developmental pathways in the offsprings, including those related to lung function and disease susceptibility. However, the sex-specific impact of a maternal high-salt diet (HSD) on offspring lung injury remains poorly understood.

Background: Baseline values and the change of platelet count (PLT) during disease were reported to be associated with prognosis of patients with cancer and intensive care treatment. We aimed to evaluate the association between PLT with the course and prognosis of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
Methods: Admission (AdmPLT) and the 14-days mean PLT (MeanPLT) values of 763 SAH patients treated between 01/2005 and 06/2016 were recorded and, for further analysis, divided into four categories: <150, 150-260, 261-400 and > 400 × 10/L.
