We demonstrate that a laser-based synchrotron X-ray source can be used to image and characterize in a single laser shot spherical capsules similar to ICF targets. Thus, we establish this source potential for real-time ultrafast imaging of the ICF laser driver interaction with the target. To produce the X-ray beam we used a 160 TW high power laser system with 3.2 J and 20 fs incident on a supersonic gas jet target at 2.5 Hz repetition rate. We produced 2.7 × 10 photons/0.1% BW/sr/shot at 10 keV with a critical energy E = 15.1 keV. In our experimental conditions the spatial resolution was 4.3 μm in the object plane. We show that it is feasible to image the capsule structure and experimentally retrieve the phase information.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the long-term outcomes of scleral fixation of aniridic black diaphragm intraocular lenses (BDIOL) in 38 eyes affected by aniridia and aphakia due to trauma or congenital conditions.
  • After an average follow-up of 28 months, there was a significant improvement in visual acuity, and patients reported reduced glare and photophobia, though some experienced complications like elevated intraocular pressure and corneal decompensation.
  • The findings suggest that scleral fixation of BDIOL is an effective solution for patients lacking capsular support, providing good vision quality with a low rate of complications, regardless of prior surgical history.

Purpose: Although it is well known that the size, shape, and surface chemistry affect the biological potential of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), the published studies that have considered the influence of AgNP surface on antibacterial activity have not provided conclusive results. This is the first study whose objective was to determine the significance of the surface net charge of AgNPs on their antibacterial potential, attraction to bacterial cells, and cell envelope disruption, considering differences in bacterial surface properties.

Methods: We evaluated five commercial AgNP colloids with identical size and shape but different surface ligands.

Pharmaceutical packaging is essential for enhancing the storage stability of medicine and can improve medication adherence and usability. Despite their widespread use, blister packs can be challenging to use, especially when pushing out the medication. This study investigates how specific cavity characteristics of blister packs can enhance usability for spherical capsules, which are harder to push out than tablets.

Polymer Capsules with Volatile Organic Compounds as Reference Materials for Controlled Emission.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

Bundesanstalt für Materialforschung und -prüfung (BAM), Unter den Eichen 87, 12205 Berlin, Germany.

Encapsulation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that could evaporate at a defined rate is of immense interest for application in emission reference materials (ERMs). Polyurethane/polyurea microcapsules with various VOC active ingredients (limonene, pinene, and toluene) were successfully produced by interfacial polymerization with Shirasu porous glass membrane emulsification in a size range between 10 and 50 μm. The effect of surfactant, VOC, monomer(s) type, and ratio has a great effect on the formulation process and morphology of capsules.

Myxobolus Bütschli, 1882 is a highly important genus of fish myxozoans, consisting of many species that cause serious diseases in ornamental cyprinid fish species in different geographic areas by infecting a wide range of organs. This study describes a new Myxobolus species infecting the gill lamellae, gill rakers and skin epidermis of goldfish (Carassius auratus) from Mohammadshahr, Iran, based on detailed morphological, histological and molecular analysis. Mature spores were small and spherical in shape, consisting of two symmetrical shell valves in frontal view, measuring 10.
