We experimentally validate a silicon photonic subsystem designed for passive optical networks with carrier reuse. The subsystem is intended for future wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) PONs. It enables radio-over-fiber signals to cohabit an assigned wavelength slot without perturbing the PON signal, while conserving carrier power for the uplink. A microring modulator remodulates the residual carrier for the RoF uplink. We successfully detected the dropped 8 GHz broadband signal and five 125 MHz radio-over-fiber signals. Two 125 MHz radio over fiber signals are remodulated onto the carrier. The uplink signal shows good performance, validating the residual downlink signals have been well rejected by the microring filters. The subsystem conserves a clean carrier for remodulation with good signal-to-carrier ratio.

Van der Waals (vdWs) materials are promising candidates for hetero-integration with silicon photonics toward miniaturization and integration. VdWs materials like molybdenum telluride and black phosphorus, despite being prominent, exhibit air sensitivity, and their room temperature emissions can be significantly broadened by tens of meV. Here, a self-encapsulation strategy is developed to scalably synthesize robust 2D vdWs ErOCl with sub-meV narrow emissions at the telecom C-band.

Kerr microresonators generate interesting and useful fundamental states of electromagnetic radiation through nonlinear interactions of continuous-wave (CW) laser light. With photonic-integration techniques, functional devices with low noise, small size, low-power consumption, scalable fabrication, and heterogeneous combinations of photonics and electronics can be realized. Kerr solitons, which stably circulate in a Kerr microresonator, have emerged as a source of coherent, ultrafast pulse trains and ultra-broadband optical-frequency combs.

Atomic defects in solids offer a versatile basis to study and realize quantum phenomena and information science in various integrated systems. All-electrical pumping of single defects to create quantum light emission has been realized in several platforms including color centers in diamond and silicon carbide, which could lead to the circuit network of electrically triggered single-photon sources. However, a wide conduction channel which reduces the carrier injection per defect site has been a major obstacle.

Color centers are promising single-photon emitters owing to their operation at room temperature and high photostability. In particular, using nanodiamonds as a host material is of interest for sensing and metrology. Furthermore, being a solid-state system allows for incorporation to photonic systems to tune both the emission intensity and photoluminescence spectrum and therefore adapt the individual color center to desired properties.
