Fungi are a versatile group of microorganisms that exist in three morphological forms, which include the yeasts (oval/spherical budding cells), true fungi (produce long filamentous, branching structures called as hyphae/mycelia), and dimorphic fungi (show both yeast at 37C and hyphal forms at room temperature). Most fungi are present in the environment and live as saprophytes. Some fungal species like the are present in the human respiratory, intestinal, and genitourinary tract as commensals. Some fungi cause infections in humans and animals (dermatophytes). Few other fungal species are responsible for opportunistic infections, mostly in debilitated and immunosuppressed individuals. is one such fungus, which is present in the soil, dead, and decomposing organic matter, and may contaminate food, fruits, and vegetables. Geotrichosis is the infection caused by species. Due to its similarity in morphology, clinical features, and the pathogenicity with common fungi like the species, and others, its clinical significance is undermined. This report presents a case of funguria and asymptomatic urinary tract infection caused by species in a patient with a renal cyst.

Best Practices in Treatment of Fungal Urinary Tract Infections.

Fungal pathogens within the urine, specifically Candida species, are a common finding amongst hospitalized patients. Risk factors for the development of candiduria involve patients with indwelling urinary drainage devices, surgical patients, patients undergoing urologic instrumentation, and diabetic patients. Candiduria often presents with an asymptomatic course but can also be a severe life-threatening process.

Background: Although the yeast () has been rarely reported in human infections, nosocomial outbreaks caused by this organism have been documented. Here we report a pseudo-outbreak of in a urology department of a Chinese hospital over a two-week period.

Methods: Three patients were admitted to the urology department of a tertiary teaching hospital in Beijing, China, from Nov to Dec 2018, for different medical intervention demands.

Candida urinary tract infections in adults.

World J Urol

November 2020

Department of Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology, Istanbul Medipol University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Candiduria is commonly seen in hospitalized patients and most of the patients are asymptomatic, but it may be due to cystitis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, epididymo-orchitis or disseminated candidiasis. Major risk factors are diabetes mellitus, indwelling urinary catheters, use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, urinary obstruction, and admission to intensive care units. Candida urinary tract infections can be caused by hematogenous spread following candidemia, or retrograde route via the urethra.

Urinary tract fungus balls are a rare pathologic entity which may be asymptomatic or have variable presentations. To date, there have been no documented cases of fungus balls presenting as painful bladder syndrome. Painful bladder syndrome is a constellation of symptoms which may include pelvic pain, urgency and frequency not explained by other causes.
