Recent updates in the WHO guidelines for malaria case management.

Sudan J Paediatr

January 2024

Independent Consultant, Lawrenceville, Georgia, USA.

This is a brief review that highlights recent updates in malaria case management. Recent WHO revisions include a new artemisinin-based molecule (artesunate-pyronaridine), revising the recommendations for treating uncomplicated malaria during the first trimester of pregnancy and optimising primaquine dose to prevent relapses. The review also highlights innovative ideas to improve the implementation of guidelines for severe malaria and pre-referral treatment with rectal artesunate.

Introduction: Neurotrophic factors are widely known for their protective effect on spiral ganglion neurons (SGN) and the protection of these neurons is of great importance to optimize Cochlear Implants, which directly stimulate SGN in deaf patients. Previous studies have identified Cometin - also known as Meteroin-like - to be neuroprotective and beneficial for metabolic disorders. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of different concentrations of recombinant human Cometin (hCometin) on SGN in regard to neuroprotection and neurite outgrowth and to evaluate its neurite guidance potential using a neurite outgrowth chamber.

Influence of frailty status on the incidence of intraoperative hypotensive events in elective surgery: Hypo-Frail, a single-centre retrospective cohort study.

Br J Anaesth

January 2025

Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Corporate Member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt Universität zu Berlin, Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine (CCM/CVK), Berlin, Germany; Medical University of Vienna, Department of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care Medicine and Pain Medicine, Clinical Division of General Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, Vienna, Austria. Electronic address:

Background: Frailty is a predictor of morbidity and mortality in older patients. This study aimed to investigate the influence of frailty status on likelihood, rate, duration, and severity of intraoperative hypotension (IOH), which can lead to severe organ dysfunction.

Methods: Surgical patients (≥70 yr old) with preoperative frailty assessment were analysed retrospectively.

Involvement of HLADQA1*05 in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease Treated with Anti-TNF Drugs.

Medicina (Kaunas)

January 2025

Laboratory of Specialistic Pediatry, Department of Public Health and Pediatrics, School of Medicine, University of Turin, 10126 Turin, Italy.

: Over the past decade, TNF inhibitors such as Infliximab and Adalimumab have become central to Inflammatory Bowel Diseases treatment, greatly enhancing patient outcomes. However, immunogenicity-where anti-drug antibodies diminish effectiveness-remains an issue, often requiring dose changes or combination therapies. Pharmacogenomics is increasingly applied in IBD to personalise treatment, especially since genetic factors like the HLA-DQA1*05 variant heighten the immunogenicity risk with IFX.

Recent developments in pharmacogenetics have emphasised the importance of customised medication, driving interest in technologies like FDM 3D-printing for tailored drug delivery. FDM 3D-printing is a promising technique for the on-demand manufacturing of customised oral dosage forms, providing flexibility in terms of shape and size, dose and drug release profiles. This study investigates the fabrication and characterisation of 3D-printed oral dosage forms using PEO as the primary polymer and PEG 6 K as a plasticiser.
