The gene excision hypothesis of hemoglobin ontogenesis was tested in persons with HbSC disease, with the use of monospecific fluorescent antibodies for the identification of hemoglobins S, C, and F in individual erythrocytes. The results are incompatible with the prediction that only one gamma- or beta-globin gene may be active in any single chromosome and provide further evidence for incomplete repression of gamma-globin genes lying cis to active beta-globin genes.

The diagnosis of hemoglobinopathy is based on a range of arguments: clinic, results of a blood count, the haemoglobin study and possibly a genetic study of the globin chains. The interpretation of these profiles can be complicated, especially in newborns due to the ontogenesis of globin genes. The clinical impact can range from simple microcytosis without anemia to severe anemia requiring iterative transfusions and various clinical symptoms depending on the number and type of chains produced.

High-altitude environments are cold and hypoxic, and many high-altitude natives have evolved changes in respiratory physiology that improve O uptake in hypoxia as adults. Altricial mammals undergo a dramatic metabolic transition from ectothermy to endothermy in early post-natal life, which may influence the ontogenetic development of respiratory traits at high altitude. Pregnant patients with β-thalassemia are more likely to have progressive anemia which expose them to risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes, blood transfusion, and iron overload. Results from our previous study indicated that Colla corii asini (CCA, E'jiao), a natural ingredient of traditional Chinese medicine, could significantly increase hemoglobin level of pregnant women with β- thalassemia, but the underlying molecular mechanism was unclear. Thus, we applied high-throughput transcriptome sequencing to study the transcriptomic change before and after the CCA treatment.
