Rapid emergence, transmission, and evolution of KPC and NDM coproducing carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Microbiol Res

January 2025

Research Institute of General Surgery, Jinling Hospital, the Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CRKP) is a major clinical concern due to limited treatment options, worsened by the emergence of KPC and NDM co-producing strains.
  • A study identified 15 strains involved in an outbreak affecting 10 patients between October 2020 and May 2021, characterized by a highly stable hybrid plasmid co-harboring resistance genes.
  • Global genomic analysis of 327 KPC-NDM-CRKP genomes revealed potential transmission events during the COVID-19 period, highlighting the urgent public health threat posed by these resistant strains.

The impact of COVID-19 public health and social measures on years of potential life lost.

J Emerg Manag

January 2025

Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.

Background: To determine the impacts of statewide coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related public health and social measures (PHSMs) and attempted pandemic mitigation measures on years of potential life lost (YPLL).

Methods: The "openness score" of each state during the COVID-19 pandemic was obtained using two open-source sites, the Multistate openness score and the Wallethub openness score. These scores combined various PHSMs, such as restrictions on gatherings and closing various types of businesses.

Background: Asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and food allergy are type 2 inflammation diseases. Since the 1960s, the prevalence of those diseases has steadily increased, presumably due to the "Hygiene hypothesis" which suggests that early exposure of infants to pathogens, siblings, and environmental dust, has a protective effect against the development of allergic diseases. The COVID-19 pandemic increased environmental hygiene due to lockdowns, masks, and social distancing.

The recent surge in emerging viral infections warrants the design of broad-spectrum antivirals. We aim to develop a lead molecule that targets a common biochemical feature of many enveloped viruses, membrane fusion. To achieve the broad-spectrum ability, instead of targeting the fusion machinery, we plan to modulate the physicochemical properties of the host and viral membranes to block fusion.
