Oxygen consumption of three black bears (Ursus americanus) under simulated denning conditions are reported. The results indicate that metabolic rate in large mammals can be significantly reduced during natural starvation. The paper summarizes data on the lowest and average metabolic rate of black bears during simulated denning.

Background: Guided by the tenets of Kolcaba's holistic comfort theory, we developed, implemented, and evaluated a simulated online pediatric advanced practice health center. The Pediatric Comfy Care Clinic (PCCC) was created to enhance person-centered diagnostic reasoning and holistic advanced management skills for family nurse practitioner students.
Methods: Our interprofessional team used a standardized approach to online design and development while integrating essential holistic comfort theory concepts for student engagement and assessment of learning.

A RASSCF approach to simulate the O K-edge XANES spectra of uranyl is employed, utilizing three models that progressively improve the representation of the local crystal environment. Simulations successfully reproduce the observed three-peak profile of the experimental spectrum and confirm peak assignments made by Denning. The [UOCl] model offers the best agreement with experiment, with peak positions (to within 1 eV) and relative peak separations accurately reproduced.

But fossorial animals cannot stay safely underground forever; they must also risk emerging overground to forage and find mates. To make this trade-off effectively and maximise their own fitness, it is imperative they assess how risk varies in space and time and adapt their denning behaviour accordingly.

It is shown that the quantum intensity noise of a single-emitter nanolaser can be accurately computed by adopting a stochastic interpretation of the standard rate equation model. The only assumption made is that the emitter excitation and photon number are stochastic variables with integer values. This extends the validity of rate equations beyond the mean-field limit and avoids using the standard Langevin approach, which is shown to fail for few emitters.

Objective: We aimed to use mathematical models of SARS-COV-2 to assess the potential efficacy of non-pharmaceutical interventions on transmission in the parcel delivery and logistics sector.
Methods: We devloped a network-based model of workplace contacts based on data and consultations from companies in the parcel delivery and logistics sectors. We used these in stochastic simulations of disease transmission to predict the probability of workplace outbreaks in this settings.
