Determining the optimal antibiotic duration for skin and soft tissue infections.

Curr Opin Infect Dis

January 2025

Department of Medicine, Clínica Rotger Quironsalud, Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Purpose Of Review: Optimal duration of therapy in SSTIs - a heterogeneous group of infections - remains unknown. The advances in knowledge of antibiotic duration of treatment in selected SSTIs that can impact clinical practice and published in the last 18 months are reviewed.

Recent Findings: Recent evidence indicates that few patients receive guideline concordant empiric antibiotics and appropriate duration in the United States, although this likely can be extrapolated to other countries.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant primary brain tumor, with a mean survival of less than 2 years. Unique brain structures and the microenvironment, including blood-brain barriers, put great challenges on clinical drug development. Sophoricoside (Sop), an isoflavone glycoside isolated from seeds of Sophora japonica L.

The hypothalamus as the central regulator of energy balance and its impact on current and future obesity treatments.

The hypothalamus is a master regulator of energy balance in the body. First-order hypothalamic neurons localized in the arcuate nucleus sense systemic signals that indicate the energy stores in the body. Through distinct projections, arcuate nucleus neurons communicate with second-order neurons, which are mostly localized in the paraventricular nucleus and in the lateral hypothalamus.

The human body consists of many different soft biological tissues that exhibit diverse microstructures and functions and experience diverse loading conditions. Yet, under many conditions, the mechanical behaviour of these tissues can be described well with similar nonlinearly elastic or inelastic constitutive relations, both in health and some diseases. Such constitutive relations are essential for performing nonlinear stress analyses, which in turn are critical for understanding physiology, pathophysiology and even clinical interventions, including surgery.

Pollination ecotypes and the origin of plant species.

Proc Biol Sci

January 2025

Centre for Functional Biodiversity, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg 3209, South Africa.

Ecological niche shifts are a key driver of phenotypic divergence and contribute to isolating barriers among lineages. For many groups of organisms, the history of these shifts and associated trait-environment correlations are well-documented at the macroevolutionary level. However, the processes that generate these patterns are initiated below the species level, often by the formation of ecotypes in contrasting environments.
