A highly effective method for the research and development of a novel macroscopic hydrogel sensor and bilayer hydrogel is reported. Based on Rhodamine 6G, an Hg sensitive fluorescent functional monomer was synthesized, then the monomer was utilized to synthesize hydrogel sensors and bilayer hydrogels. Hydrogel sensor has prominent selectivity to Hg, the bilayer hydrogel has shape changing function additionally. By combining a thermoresponsive hydrogel layer, poly N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM), with an Hg selective hydrogel layer via macroscopic supramolecular assembly, a bilayer hydrogel is obtained that can be tailored and reswells. The bilayer hydrogel sensor can show complex shape deformation caused by the PNIPAM layer and the Hg-responsive characteristic of hydrogel sensor layer can be observed under visible light or UV light. This work will provide novel insights for the design and synthesis of novel smart materials with synergistic functions.

Conductive hydrogels have great potential for applications in flexible wearable sensors due to the combination of biocompatibility, mechanical flexibility and electrical conductivity. However, constructing conductive hydrogels with high toughness, low hysteresis and skin-like modulus simultaneously remains challenging. In the present study, we prepared a tough and conductive polyacrylamide/pullulan/ammonium sulfate hydrogel with a semi-interpenetrating network.

Amyloid fibrils (AFs) are highly ordered nanostructures formed through the self-assembly of proteins under specific conditions. Due to their unique properties, AFs have garnered significant attention as biomaterials over the past decade. Nevertheless, the increasing reliance on animal proteins for AFs production raises sustainability concerns, highlighting the need for a transition to plant-based proteins as more environmentally friendly feedstocks.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) more than 14% of the world's food production is lost every year before reaching retail, and another 17% is lost during the retail stage. The use of the expiration date as the main estimator of the life-end of food products creates unjustified food waste. Sensors capable of quantifying the effective food freshness and quality could substantially reduce food waste and enable more effective management of the food chain.

In this study, we developed a novel composite catalytic hydrogel, which integrates excellent mechanical properties, catalytic activity, and sensing performance. Discarded hydrogel sensors are reused as templates for in-situ generation of metal nanoparticles, and multifunctional hydrogels combining sensing and catalysis are realized. Polyacrylamide (PAM) provides a three-dimensional network structure, while octadecyl methacrylate (SMA) acts as a hydrophobic association center, enhancing the structural stability of the hydrogel.

Detecting Hypoxia Through the Non-Invasive and Simultaneous Monitoring of Sweat Lactate and Tissue Oxygenation.

Biosensors (Basel)

Department of Chemistry, University of Waterloo, 200 University Ave West, Waterloo, ON N2L 3G1, Canada.

Hypoxia, characterized by inadequate tissue oxygenation, may result in tissue damage and organ failure if not addressed. Current detection approaches frequently prove insufficient, depending on symptoms and rudimentary metrics such as tissue oxygenation, which fail to comprehensively identify the onset of hypoxia. The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) has recognized sweat lactate as a possible marker for the early identification of decubitus ulcers, nevertheless, neither sweat lactate nor oxygenation independently provides an appropriate diagnosis of hypoxia.
