Toxocara sp. are zoonotic parasitic roundworms that cause infection and morbidity in both developed and developing countries. In humans, infection is thought to be most common in children, particularly those living in poverty, and usually results from consumption of soil contaminated with parasite eggs deposited by dog or cat faeces. Infection in humans results in different clinical manifestations, some more overt like visceral or ocular larva migrans and others more cryptic like neurocognitive delay. Despite its pervasiveness, toxocariasis has become a neglected infection. We review the dynamics of the human-animal interface in the context of this parasite, discuss the challenges in controlling transmission to humans, and cite key areas of research that could enable improved interventions. With political will and proper resource allocation, we propose that effective interventions are possible in the near term.

Background: This study sought to investigate the seroprevalence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), toxocariasis, brucellosis, and salmonellosis, as well as their co-infection and potential cross-reaction, in children under 15 years referred to health centers in Ardabil province, Iran, from 2019 to 2021.
Methods: The current study examined 1,550 serum samples using direct agglutination test (DAT), Toxocara canis ELISA, Wright, and Widal tests to detect antibodies against Leishmania, Toxocara, Brucella, and Salmonella, respectively. We also compared the test results to determine the possibility of cross-reactivity or simultaneous seropositivity in the tested samples.

Toxocara canis larvae are one of the most overlooked agents of nervous system infection in paratenic hosts. Previous studies in mouse models have shown that infection with various (mainly high) numbers of larvae leads to neurobehavioral disturbances and pathological changes. Our study investigated whether the infection with low and moderate numbers of larvae could affect the physical condition, motor skills, and pathogenesis in the brains of experimentally infected mice.

It has a limited clinical resolution with the available drugs, making it challenging to treat. Quercetin, which possesses biological and pharmacological qualities including antiparasitic, antioxidant, and anticancer activities, is a possible substitute for the current medications.
