Gastrointestinal infections are widespread and a major cause of global mortality, mainly affecting young children and the elderly. In Germany, each resident typically experiences one episode yearly. After COVID-19 pandemic, gastrointestinal infection rates have significantly increased again.

Due to sedentary lifestyle and rising prevalence of obesity, patients with general population and those who are infected with chronic hepatitis B are found to have metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Both chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and MASLD can damage hepatocytes in their own way, but concomitant HBV-MASLD has its own clinical implications. Cherry on top is the presence of diabetes mellitus, hypertension or obesity which added more chances of unfavorable outcomes in these patients.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) was an important public source of information - not only about the pandemic, but also thousands of other potential health emergencies. Here, we examine the 242 reports published in the WHO Disease Outbreak News (DON) during the first four years of the Covid-19 pandemic (2020 to 2023), and document the diseases and regions that were reported. We find that multinational epidemics of diseases like Ebola virus and MERS-CoV continue to dominate the DON.
