As promising fibrous reinforcements in the thick composites manufacturing, 3-dimensional warp interlock fabrics (3DWIFs) are recognised more and more in the industry for their outstanding mechanical properties compared to the 2D laminates. The present work shows the influence of the fabric's architecture on the tensile behaviour of 3DWIFs. Five kinds of 3D fabrics with different interlock structures have been designed according to the main category of binding warp yarn evolution. These five 3DWIFs, containing both binding and stuffer warp yarns and produced with the same warp and weft densities, are experimentally tested via uniaxial tensile tests. The experimental results of the different 3DWIFs have been compared to find the optimal solution based on several mechanical performances. Fabric structures have an impact on tensile properties both in the warp and weft directions. Furthermore, other influential factors, for example, the yarn crimps during the weaving process and the crimp angles of binding warp yarns in 3DWIFs, are investigated and discussed in the paper. The influence of the total crimp angles related to the binding path on the tensile properties of 3DWIFs via the inter yarns friction is summarised.

January 2025

College of Materials Science and Engineering, Hunan University, Changsha, 410072, People's Republic of China.

Background: Tissue engineering holds promise for vascular repair and regeneration by mimicking the extracellular matrix of blood vessels. However, achieving a functional and thick vascular wall with aligned fiber architecture by electrospinning remains a significant challenge.

Methods: A novel electrospinning setup was developed that utilizes an auxiliary electrode and a spring.

Probing the physical hallmarks of cancer.

The physical microenvironment plays a crucial role in tumor development, progression, metastasis and treatment. Recently, we proposed four physical hallmarks of cancer, with distinct origins and consequences, to characterize abnormalities in the physical tumor microenvironment: (1) elevated compressive-tensile solid stresses, (2) elevated interstitial fluid pressure and the resulting interstitial fluid flow, (3) altered material properties (for example, increased tissue stiffness) and (4) altered physical micro-architecture. As this emerging field of physical oncology is being advanced by tumor biologists, cell and developmental biologists, engineers, physicists and oncologists, there is a critical need for model systems and measurement tools to mechanistically probe these physical hallmarks.

To study the enhancement effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the splitting tensile properties of foamed concrete backfill in which cement and fly ash were used as the cementitious materials and natural sand was used as the aggregate, specimens of CNT-modified foamed concrete backfill were prepared. Brazilian splitting tests were used to investigate the splitting tensile strength of the CNT-modified foamed concrete backfill, and the digital speckle correlation method was used to analyze the stress field characteristics and crack expansion law of the specimens during splitting tensile testing. The stress-strain characteristics and energy dissipation laws of the backfill were studied at various static loading rates, and a relationship between the splitting tensile strength, ultimate strain, and loading rate was established.

Scaffolds play a crucial role in tendon healing by providing structural support, promoting cell infiltration, and guiding tissue regeneration. Polycaprolactone (PCL) has been used as a polymer in biological scaffolds for several tissue engineering studies. This study aimed to investigate the effects of curcumin-loaded PCL scaffold on Achilles tendon using a tenotomy model in rats.

January 2025

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ulsan University Hospital, University of Ulsan, College of Medicine, 25 Daehakbyeongwon-ro, Dong-gu, Ulsan, 44033, South Korea.

Background: The primary treatment for cervical insufficiency is cervical cerclage (mechanical support) with vaginal progesterone (biochemical support). Cerclage is a surgical procedure that mechanically increases the tensile capacity of the cervix. Therefore, it is necessary to analyse the effects of cerclage from a mechanical point of view.
