Introduction: The global motorcycle market has grown significantly, with over 770 million vehicles estimated to be in use worldwide. Motorcycle-related road traffic deaths in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Colombia are concerning, comprising 30% of all reported fatalities. Cartagena has an average of 70 motorcycle-related deaths annually between 2019 and 2022, making it a high-risk area for motorcyclists.

Neural dynamics underlying self-control in the primate subthalamic nucleus.

The subthalamic nucleus (STN) is hypothesized to play a central role in neural processes that regulate self-control. Still uncertain, however, is how that brain structure participates in the dynamically evolving estimation of value that underlies the ability to delay gratification and wait patiently for a gain. To address that gap in knowledge, we studied the spiking activity of neurons in the STN of monkeys during a task in which animals were required to remain motionless for varying periods of time in order to obtain food reward.

InterspeciesForms the hybridization of architectural, biological and robotic agencies.

Archit Intell

March 2023

School of Architecture and Urban Design, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia.

Article Synopsis
  • InterspeciesForms integrates the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus into architectural design, aiming to create innovative forms by merging biological growth with design aesthetics.
  • The project employs robotic feedback systems to analyze mycelia growth, allowing for a continuous exchange of data between the physical and digital realms to inform design decisions using algorithms based on stigmergy.
  • Ultimately, the process involves 3D printing with a mix of mycelium and agricultural waste, leading to a dynamic collaboration where the architect and mycelia influence each other's development in real time.
