Non-Hermitian Topology in Hermitian Topological Matter.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

University of Tokyo, Institute for Solid State Physics, Kashiwa, Chiba 277-8581, Japan.

Non-Hermiticity gives rise to distinctive topological phenomena absent in Hermitian systems. However, connection between such intrinsic non-Hermitian topology and Hermitian topology has remained largely elusive. Here, considering the bulk and boundary as an environment and system, respectively, we demonstrate that anomalous boundary states in Hermitian topological insulators exhibit non-Hermitian topology.

Superselection Rules and Bosonic Quantum Computational Resources.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Laboratoire Matériaux et Phénomènes Quantiques, Université Paris Cité, CNRS UMR 7162, 75013 Paris, France.

We present a method to systematically identify and classify quantum optical nonclassical states as classical or nonclassical based on the resources they create on a bosonic quantum computer. This is achieved by converting arbitrary bosonic states into multiple modes, each occupied by a single photon, thereby defining qubits of a bosonic quantum computer. Starting from a bosonic classical-like state in a representation that explicitly respects particle number superselection rules, we apply universal gates to create arbitrary superpositions of states with the same total particle number.

Materials that are constantly driven out of thermodynamic equilibrium, such as active and living systems, typically violate the Einstein relation. This may arise from active contributions to particle fluctuations which are unrelated to the dissipative resistance of the surrounding medium. We show that in these cases the widely used relation between informatic entropy production and heat dissipation does not hold.
