Risk factors for postoperative recurrence after full-endoscopic microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia: a retrospective study and predictive nomogram.

Eur J Med Res

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Neuromedicine Center, Beijing Shijitan Hospital, Capital Medical University, No. 10, Tieyi Road, Yangfangdian, Haidian District, Beijing, 100038, People's Republic of China.

Background: Full-endoscopic microvascular decompression (fE-MVD) is an emerging treatment option for trigeminal neuralgia (TN). However, the risk factors associated with postoperative recurrence of TN after fE-MVD procedure remain controversial. The aim of the present study was to summarize the surgical technique of fE-MVD for the treatment of TN and to develop a predictive model for recurrence at 1 year postoperatively based on independent risk factors.

What are the Pterygomaxillary Fracture Patterns in Cleft Orthognathic Surgery?

J Oral Maxillofac Surg

December 2024

Professor, Faculty of Dentistry of Bauru, Department of Surgery, Stomatology, Pathology and Radiology, University of São Paulo, Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil; Professor, Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies, University of São Paulo (HRAC/USP), Bauru, São Paulo, Brazil.

Background: Patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) often exhibit unique anatomical variations in the pterygoid plates, which can influence fracture patterns at the pterygomaxillary junction (PMJ) during Le Fort I osteotomy. These differences may increase the risk of unfavorable fractures, complicating surgery and recovery.

Purpose: The study purpose was to measure the association between the osteotomy level with the PMJ fracture patterns in CLP patients undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy.

Disparities Attributable to Sex Differences in 4680 Lumbar Fusion Outcomes.

World Neurosurg

December 2024

Department of Neurosurgery, Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA; McKenna EpiLog Fellowship in Population Health, at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA. Electronic address:

Background: While studies have examined the relationship between sex and outcomes after lumbar fusion surgery, few have strictly controlled for other patient-level variables. In this study, we use coarsened exact matching to determine the effect of patient-reported sex on spinal fusion outcomes.

Methods: Outcomes across 4680 consecutive adult single-level, posterior-only lumbar fusions at a multihospital academic medical center were retrospectively assessed.

Mechanistic insights into carbonate radical-driven reactions: Selectivity and the hydrogen atom abstraction route.

J Hazard Mater

Carbonate radical (CO) is inevitably produced in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) when addressing real-world aqueous environments, yet it often goes unnoticed due to its relatively lower reactivity. In this study, we emphasized the pivotal role of CO in targeting the elimination of contaminants by contrasting it with conventional reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and assessing the removal of sulfamethazine (SMT). Similar to singlet oxygen (O), CO shows a preference for electron-rich organic compounds.

Autoreactive, aberrantly activated lymphocytes that target myelin antigens in the central nervous system (CNS) are primary drivers of the autoimmune disease multiple sclerosis (MS). Proliferating cells including activated lymphocytes require deoxyribonucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs) for DNA replication. dNTPs can be synthesised via the de novo pathway from precursors such as glucose and amino acids or the deoxyribonucleoside salvage pathway from extracellular deoxyribonucleosides.
