Background And Aims: Damage to the skeletal muscles, with a pronounced and accelerated decline in muscle quality have been described as a new complication of diabetic patients, so this study was conducted to assess the prevalence of sarcopenia in sample of Iraqi patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: This was a case-control study conducted at Baghdad Teaching Hospital from September 2018 to April 2019. Participants were men and women aged between (40-70) years with type 2 diabetes mellitus diagnosed by an Internist/Endocrinologist doctor and on treatment for at least 6 months earlier. Sixty-five patients and 65 matched healthy controls in age, gender and body mass index were studied. Diagnosis of sarcopenia was done according to revised European consensus on the definition and diagnosis of sarcopenia 2018. Glycemic control was evaluated by mean of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test.

Results: The mean age of the patients was 57.0 ± 7.7 years, and mean disease duration was 7.2 ± 6.0 years. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 10 (15.4%) in diabetic patients and 5 (7.7%) in controls while the prevalence of presarcopenia was 7 (10.8%) in diabetic patients and 3 (4.6%) in controls (p-value = 0.133).: The mean age of the patients was 57.0 ± 7.7 years, and mean disease duration was 7.2 ± 6.0 years. Conclusions: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus had a higher prevalence of sarcopenia compared with healthy controls although statistically was not significant.

Article Synopsis
  • Aging leads to physiological changes and increased disease vulnerability, culminating in higher mortality rates as individuals get older.
  • Regular physical activity (PA) and exercise can counteract aging effects, improve health span, and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
  • Personalized exercise plans, including various forms of training like aerobic and resistance exercises, are essential for maintaining health and functionality in older adults, particularly those with age-related issues.

According to the federal register, up to 3,77 million elderly Russians have a confirmed diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2), the most important criterion for the effectiveness of treatment of which is the achievement of therapeutic control targets. At the same time, the structure of the algorithm for their assessment in elderly patients is quite complex and involves the analysis of many different parameters, including indicators of geriatric status. The aim of the study was to develop a digital clinical calculator for determining individual goals of DM2 control in elderly patients based on the principles of evidence-based medicine.

Objectives: To compare the total medical costs associated with operative versus non-operative medical procedures for femoral neck fractures in older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined 4,157 Optum beneficiaries diagnosed with AD who filed an initial claim for femoral neck fracture between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2017. Generalized linear regression with Gamma log link function was performed to evaluate total medical costs between surgical treatment and non-operative care while controlling for covariates.

Background: Sarcopenia and reduced muscle quality index have garnered special attention due to their prevalence among older individuals and the adverse effects they generate. Early detection of these geriatric pathologies holds significant potential, enabling the implementation of interventions that may slow or reverse their progression, thereby improving the individual's overall health and quality of life. In this context, artificial intelligence opens up new opportunities to identify the key identifying factors of these pathologies, thus facilitating earlier intervention and personalized treatment approaches.

The present study leverages the comprehensive data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to examine the Influencing factors of sarcopenia (SA) and sarcopenic obesity (SO). The investigation is designed to a non-invasive, cost-effective, and convenient method that is applicable to the adult population, enabling the accurate and simultaneous detection of risks associated with SA and SO. Furthermore, this research will evaluate the critical values of effective anthropometric indicators, providing early warning for risk management in self-health care and offering valuable insights for subsequent research and clinical practice.
