We report the dual postsynthetic modification (PSM) of a metal-organic framework (MOF) involving the microscopic conversion of C-H bonds into C-C bonds and the mesoscopic introduction of hierarchical porosity. MOF crystals underwent single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformations during the electrophilic aromatic substitution of Co (m-DOBDC) (m-DOBDC =4,6-dioxo-1,3-benzenedicarboxylate) with alkyl halides and formaldehyde. The steric hindrance caused by the proximity of the introduced functional groups to the coordination bonds reduced bond stability and facilitated the transformation into hierarchically porous mesostructures by etching with in situ generated protons (hydroniums) and halides. The numerous defect sites in the mesostructural MOFs are potential water-sorption sites. However, since the introduced functional groups are close to the main adsorption sites, even methyl groups are able to considerably decrease water adsorption, whereas hydroxy groups increase adsorption at low vapor pressures.

Developing donor-acceptor [n]cycloparaphenylenes (D-A [n]CPPs) with multiple emissions from different emissive states remains challenging yet crucial for achieving white-light emission in single-molecule. Here, we report our explorations into acceptor engineering of quinone-based D-A [10]CPPs (Nq/Aq/Tq[10]CPPs) via a post-lateral annulation using Diels-Alder reactions of oxTh[10]CPP. X-ray analysis reveals that Nq[10]CPP displays a side by side packing via naphthoquione stacking while Aq[10]CPP adopts an intercalated conformation through anthraquinone interaction.

Unlabelled: Mixed-mode sorbents exhibit two or more primary retention mechanisms, which can enhance the selectivity and capacity of the extraction process in a single step. In this study, a facile approach was proposed to prepare functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) by post-synthetic oxidation. The composites could be varied independently for each processing step, resulting in four frameworks to meet different sample pretreatment requirements.

Simultaneous dual post-synthetic modification was realised in multivariate isoreticular zinc 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylate frameworks co-loaded with thermo-reactive allyloxy and propargyloxy groups. Radiative heating initiates dual cascade reactions, simultaneously changing both groups under the same conditions with preservation of framework topology and porosity. This work provides a new strategy to target multiple groups in shorter sequences for more efficient metal-organic framework post-synthetic modification.

Hypochlorite (ClO) as a kind of highly toxic pollutant has garnered significant interest in detection methods, highlighting the pressing need to develop intelligent functional materials for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of ClO in aqueous solutions. Herein, a ratiometric fluorescent sensor was prepared by the combination of acriflavine (Acr) and UIO-66 via a post-synthetic modification strategy. Acr/UIO-66 exhibited both high crystallinity typical of metal-organic frameworks and demonstrated good fluorescent and thermal stability.
