Article Abstract
The Wenzel model, commonly used for predicting the equilibrium contact angle (CA) of drops which penetrate the asperities of a rough surface, does not account for the liquid volume stored in the asperities. Interestingly, many previous experimental and molecular dynamics studies have noted discrepancies between observed CAs and those predicted by the Wenzel model because of this neglected liquid volume. Here, we apply a thermodynamic model to wetting of periodically patterned surfaces to derive a volume-corrected Wenzel equation in the limit of small pattern wavelength (compared to drop size). We show that the corrected equilibrium CA is smaller than that predicted by the Wenzel equation and that the reduction in CA can be significant when the liquid volume within the asperities becomes non-negligible compared to the total droplet volume. In such cases, the corrected CAs agree reasonably well with experimental observations and results of molecular dynamics simulations reported in previous studies.

Hormonal agents administered for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) may lead to osteoporosis, skeletal events, reduced quality of life, and even reduced overall survival (OS). Bone-modifying agents may prevent those events but their effect on cancer-control outcomes remains uncertain. Relying on our institutional tertiary-care database, we explored the effect of bone-modifying agents (bisphosphonates such as zoledronic acid and denosumab) on OS and progression-free survival in patients with mCRPC with at least 1 bone metastasis using Kaplan-Meyer estimates and Cox regression models.

Objective: To systematically explore vulvar pathology diagnosed prior to vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC), as well as the association with tumor characteristics, stage and survival outcome, with the aim of improving vulvar cancer prevention strategies.
Methods: VSCC diagnosed between 2005 and 2019 were identified from a population-based cohort provided by the Dutch Nationwide Pathology Databank. Pathology reports were reviewed to identify vulvar pathology diagnosed before primary VSCC.

Introduction: Due to the ethical conflict potential and far-reaching negative consequences of coercive measures (CM) in acute psychiatry, approaches to reduce the use of CM are investigated increasingly. One approach is the recovery-, resilience-, and patient-centered "Weddinger Modell" (WM) for inpatient psychiatric care. The present study evaluates the WM and investigates whether cases affected by CM, cases affected by seclusion or restraint, and the number, total duration, and average individual duration of CM per case are significantly reduced after WM-implementation.
