The authors observe variations in the calcaneo-fibular ligament because this ligament controls two articulations, the talo-crural and the subtalar. This study is based on the dissection of the ankle of 20 specimens. The calcaneo-fibular ligament is reinforced by the ventral and lateral talo-calcaneus ligaments with variations. 3 types of disposition have been described. Type A: A lateral talo-calcaneal ligament reinforces the calcaneo-fibular ligament. These two ligaments are divergent on the proximal, medial, or distal part. Type B: There is an independent lateral talo-calcaneal ligament forward of the calcaneo-fibular ligament. Type C: A ventral talo-calcaneal ligament is observed, parallel to the interosseous ligament. The authors consider the consequences of variation in the lateral ligaments of the ankle for the functioning of the tibio-tarsal articulation, the subtalar articulation and the astragalo-scaphoid articulation in order to propose specific radiographic examination of the kinematics of the ankle.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the biomechanical effects of subtalar ligament injury and reconstruction on stability of the subtalar joint in all three spatial planes.
Methods: Fifteen fresh frozen cadaveric legs were used, with transfixed tibiotalar joints to isolate motion to the subtalar joint. An arthrometer fixed to the lateral aspect of the calcaneus measured angular displacement in all three spatial planes on the inversion and eversion stress tests.

Introduction This paper aims to report the incidence of ligamentous, tendon, and other structural injuries associated with an anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) injury based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. Methods The reports of all patients who underwent surgical treatment for ATFL injury between 2021 and 2022 at Changi General Hospital and had preoperative MRI ankle scans performed were analyzed in this retrospective study. Patients who had a preoperative MRI ankle scan performed with specific reporting of the ATFL, calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), deltoid ligaments, peroneal tendons, and the presence of an osteochondral defect (OCD) were included in this study.

Introduction: In lateral ankle instability, anatomical ligament reconstructions are generally performed using arthroscopy. The ligament graft is passed through the talar, fibular and calcaneal tunnels, reconstructing the anterior talofibular and calcaneofibular (CFL) bundles. However, the calcaneal insertion of the CFL needs to be performed in an extra-articular fashion, and cannot be carried out under arthroscopy, thus requiring specific anatomical landmarks.

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate the stiffness of the anterior talo-fibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneo-fibular ligament (CFL) using shear wave elastography (SWE) with the ankle in the neutral position and in varus, in young healthy adult volunteers. We also evaluated the reliability and reproducibility of the SWE measurements.
Hypothesis: The stiffness of both ligaments increases with increasing ankle varus.
