Lake Victoria is a shared water resource between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, which is the second largest freshwater lake in the world. It has long since suffered from the consequences of overexploitation of its resources, mainly fish stocks, and increasingly high pollution. The closure of 58% of the fish processing plants (FPPs) is attributed to the declining fish stocks due to overfishing and pollution in particular. The installation and operation of a pilot membrane bioreactor (MBR) in Kisumu, Kenya, adopts an integrated approach by providing an integral, sustainable, cost-effective, and robust solution for water sanitation, which also meets the demand for clean water in the fish processing industry, aquaculture, and irrigation. The innovative system comprises a pilot MBR coupled with a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS). The RAS is able to recirculate 90% to 95% of its water volume; only the water loss through evaporation and drum filter back flushing has to be replaced. To compensate for this water deficit, the MBR treats domestic wastewater for further reuse. Additionally, excess purified water is used for irrigating a variety of local vegetables and could also be used in FPPs. The pilot-scale MBR plant with around 6 m submerged commercial polyethersulfone (PES) membranes provides treated water in basic agreement with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) standards for irrigation and aquaculture, showing no adverse effects on tilapia fingerlings production. A novel membrane module with a low-fouling coating is operating stably but has not yet shown improved performance compared to the commercial one. Background: Globally, diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) has been implicated in the spread of waterborne diseases and abattoir wastewater has played a role in its dissemination into watersheds. This study isolated and characterised DEC from the abattoir wastewater-impacted Iyi-Etu River and other water sources at the Amansea livestock market settlement.
Methods: A total of 96 water samples comprising river water (upstream, downstream 1, downstream 2), borehole, well, sachet and abattoir wastewater samples were tested for DEC.

In view of the urgent concerns pertaining to the proliferation of rural wastewater discharges and the imperative for decentralized treatment, this article examines the phenomenon of physical clogging in a small-scale horizontal submerged flow artificial wetland system. Through a combination of experimental analysis and CFD-EDM numerical simulations, the impact of clogging on the hydraulic efficiency of the system was subjected to rigorous examination. Based on these findings, an innovative design strategy was proposed, namely the addition of vertical baffles.

Despite a lot of efforts devoted to construct efficient microbiomes, there are still major obstacles to moving from the lab to industrial applications due to the inapplicability of existing technologies or limited understanding of microbiome variation regularity. Here we show a domestication strategy to cultivate an effciient and resilient functional microbiome for addressing phenolic wastewater challenges, which involves directional domestication in shaker, laboratory water test in small-scale, gas test in pilot scale, water test in pilot scale, and engineering application in industrial scale. The domestication process includes the transition from water to gas, which provided complex transient environment for screening of a more adaptable and robust microbiome, thereby mitigating the performance disparities encountered when transitioning from laboratory experimentation to industrial engineering applications.

Given the limited research on pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the Wuhan section of the Yangtze River (WYR), this work investigated the distribution of 15 PPCPs in this region, assessed their ecological risks and annual fluxes. It was further to analyze the levels of indicator sucralose in the WYR to understand the sources of PPCPs. The results showed the average concentrations were 143.

Submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) is a promising technology in municipal wastewater treatment, but the membrane fouling has restricted its development. In this study, an integrated submerged ceramic membrane bioreactor (C-SMBR) was constructed to treat domestic wastewater, and the characteristics of membrane fouling and the microbial community structure were investigated. The results showed that the average removal efficiencies of COD, TN, NH-N reached 94.
