Aims: This study evaluates the action of Weissella paramesenteroides WpK4 on amoebic colitis.

Methods And Results: Weissella paramesenteroides WpK4 was administered in Entamoeba dispar infected and noninfected mice and clinical parameters were evaluated. Following 7 days, the caeca were collected for histopathology, morphometry and immunohistochemical staining of MUC-2, CDC-47 and IgA. The treatment reduced diarrhoea and the presence of blood in the faeces and diminished the area of necrosis, also causing weight gain. Also, the addition of this bacterium enhanced the expression of the mucin (MUC-2). The reduction in necrosis and increased CDC-47 expression indicates significant epithelial regeneration. The negative correlation between CDC-47 and the necrosis area reveals that the bacterium favoured the recovery of the necrotic regions and the positive correlation found between the expression of MUC-2 and CDC-47 indicates that the epithelial regeneration also supports the synthesis of MUC-2.

Conclusions: Weissella paramesenteroides WpK4 was able to increase the protection of the intestinal mucosa against experimental amoebic colitis through the increase of MUC-2 and epithelial regeneration.

Significance And Impact Of The Study: Weissella paramesenteroides WpK4 presents the potential to become a complementary tool in the treatment of amoebic colitis.

Article Synopsis
  • Pasteurization heats dairy products to eliminate harmful bacteria, with common methods involving temperatures of 72 °C for 15 seconds or 63 °C for 30 minutes.
  • A study analyzed 17 samples of commercial pasteurized milk, grouped by shelf life, revealing dominant microbial communities of Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteroidetes, along with specific lactic acid bacteria per group.
  • Notably, the study identified a strain of Enterococcus faecium SFM2 with superior heat tolerance compared to another strain, contributing to insights on microorganisms in pasteurized milk and potential applications for thermoresistant lactic acid bacteria.

Article Synopsis
  • * In a study, mice treated with W. paramesenteroides WpK4 showed increased intestinal mucus production, better villi regeneration, and 100% survival, compared to 60% survival in the control group after chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU).
  • * The probiotic strain can produce and metabolize tryptophan, and its protective effects are associated with increased expression of tryptophan-related molecules in the mice, but these benefits are negated when an AhR inhibitor is

College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China. Electronic address:

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Danggui Sini Decoction (DGSD), which is commonly used to treat sciatica, has been shown to have an analgesic effect, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. Here, Danggui Sini Decoction was shown to normalize the intestinal microbiota and serum metabolite levels to exert an analgesic effect.

Aim Of The Study: This study aimed to elucidate the therapeutic effects of DGSD on sciatica and the underlying mechanisms involved.

Pulses are considered superfoods for the future world due to their properties, but they require processing to reduce antinutritional factors (ANFs) and increase bioactivity. In this study, bean flour ( L.) was fermented under different conditions (addition of CRL 2211 and/or CRL 2182, temperature, time and dough yield) to improve its nutri-functional quality.
