Tuberculosis and people who use drugs: why focus on this overlooked population is important and why adapted interventions are necessary.

Lancet Glob Health

January 2025

Pathogenesis and Control of Chronic and Emerging Infections, University of Montpellier, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale, Montpellier, France. Electronic address:

People who use drugs show a higher incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis than people who do not use drugs in areas where Mycobacterium tuberculosis is endemic. However, this population is largely neglected in national tuberculosis programmes. Strategies for active case finding, screening, and linkage to care designed for the general population are not adapted to the needs of people who use drugs, who are stigmatised and difficult to reach.

Whole genome sequencing characterization of Clostridioides difficile from Bulgaria during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diagn Microbiol Infect Dis

January 2025

National Reference Laboratory of Control and Monitoring of Antibiotic Resistance (NRL-CMAR), Department Microbiology, National Center of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases (NCIPD), 26 Yanko Sakazov Blvd., Sofia, Bulgaria.

Increased incidence of Clostridioides difficile infections were documented in Bulgarian hospitals during COVID-19. WGS was performed on 39 isolates from seven hospitals during 2015-2022. Antimicrobial resistance and toxin genes were inferred from genomes.

: Tuberculosis (TB) is preventable and curable, but multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) and extensively drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB) pose significant challenges worldwide due to the limited treatment options, lengths of therapies, and high rates of treatment failure. The management of MDR-TB has been revolutionized by all oral anti-TB drug regimens that are likely to improve adherence and treatment outcomes. These regimes include bedaquiline (B), pretomanid (P), and linezolid (L) (BPaL), and moxifloxacin if resistance to fluoroquinolones is not detected (BPaLM).

A Scoping Review of the Current Knowledge of the Social Determinants of Health and Infectious Diseases (Specifically COVID-19, Tuberculosis, and H1N1 Influenza) in Canadian Arctic Indigenous Communities.

Int J Environ Res Public Health

December 2024

Indigenous and Global Health Research Group, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, College of Health Sciences, University of Alberta, 1-126 8602 112 Street, Edmonton, AB T6G 2E1, Canada.

Social determinants of health (SDHs) and the impact of colonization can make Canadian Arctic Indigenous communities susceptible to infectious diseases, including the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This scoping review followed the PRISMA guidelines for scoping reviews and studied what is known about selected pandemics (COVID-19, tuberculosis, and H1N1 influenza) and SDHs (healthcare accessibility, food insecurity, mental health, cultural continuity, housing, community infrastructure, and socioeconomic status (SES)) for Canadian Arctic Indigenous communities. Original studies published in English and French up to October 2024 were located in databases (PubMed, Medline, and CINAHL), , and through reference tracking.

A systemic review of the utility of antituberculosis therapy for presumed tuberculous uveitis.

BMC Infect Dis

January 2025

Department of Infectious Diseases at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, Victorian Tuberculosis Program, Melbourne Health, University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia.

Background: Uveitis presumed to be secondary to Mycobacterium tuberculosis is a rare but potentially blinding condition. Difficulty in making an accurate diagnosis and the low incidence of TB uveitis (TBU) contribute to the lack of evidence regarding the best management of this condition. This systematic review aims to analyse existing research to provide a summary of the literature regarding the utility of TB therapy for the management of TBU.
