AI Article Synopsis

  • Dense blooms of filamentous cyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea are significant for nitrogen fixation, especially in the Bothnian Sea with rates now at 80 kt N per year.
  • Over the past decades, nitrogen fixation has doubled and now surpasses external nitrogen inputs from rivers and the atmosphere.
  • The findings highlight the importance of internal nitrogen loading for managing ecosystems, as it can undermine efforts to reduce external nutrient pollution.

Article Abstract

Dense blooms of diazotrophic filamentous cyanobacteria are formed every summer in the Baltic Sea. We estimated their contribution to nitrogen fixation by combining two decades of cyanobacterial biovolume monitoring data with recently measured genera-specific nitrogen fixation rates. In the Bothnian Sea, estimated nitrogen fixation rates were 80 kt N year, which has doubled during recent decades and now exceeds external loading from rivers and atmospheric deposition of 69 kt year. The estimated contribution to the Baltic Proper was 399 kt N year, which agrees well with previous estimates using other approaches and is greater than the external input of 374 kt N year. Our approach can potentially be applied to continuously estimate nitrogen loads via nitrogen fixation. Those estimates are crucial for ecosystem adaptive management since internal nitrogen loading may counteract the positive effects of decreased external nutrient loading.

Carbon catalysts have shown promise as an alternative to the currently available energy-intensive approaches for nitrogen fixation (NF) to urea, NH, or related nitrogenous compounds. The primary challenges for NF are the natural inertia of nitrogenous molecules and the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Recently, carbon-based materials have made significant progress due to their tunable electronic structure and ease of defect formation.

Legumes are well-known for symbiotic nitrogen fixation, whereas associative nitrogen fixation for nonlegume plants needs more attention. Most associative nitrogen-fixing bacteria are applied in their original plant species and need further study for broad adaptation. Additionally, if isolated nitrogen-fixing bacteria could function under fertilizer conditions, it is often ignored.

Growth heterosis is crucial for Populus deltoides breeding, a key industrial-timber and ecological-construction tree species in temperate regions. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying carbon (C)-nitrogen (N) metabolism coordination in regulating growth heterosis remain unclear. Herein high-hybrids of P.

Understanding the adaptation of archaea to hypoxia is essential for deciphering the functions and mechanisms of microbes when suffering environmental changes. However, the dynamics and responses of archaea to the sedimentary hypoxia in Bohai Sea are still unclear. In this study, the diversity, composition, and distribution of archaeal community in sediment along an inshore-offshore transect across the oxygen-depleted area in the Bohai Sea were investigated in June, July, and August of 2021 by employing high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene.

In prokaryotes, DNA methylation plays roles in DNA repair, gene expression, cell cycle progression, and immune recognition of foreign DNA. Genome-wide methylation patterns can vary between strains, influencing phenotype, and gene transfer. However, broader evolutionary studies on bacterial epigenomic variation remain limited.
