Amyloidosis is an extracellular deposition of amyloid located in different organs or in a systemic distribution. We present a case of a 78 year-old male with hemodyalisis assosciated amyloidosisis involving the right sternoclavicular joint. Clinical and imaging implications are described.

Background: The pathogenesis of beta 2-microglobulin amyloidosis (A beta 2m) has yet to be fully elucidated.
Methods: We describe the distribution and extent of A beta 2m deposition and macrophagic infiltration in cartilage, capsule, and synovium of sternoclavicular joints obtained postmortem from 54 patients after 3 to 244 (median 46) months of dialysis. Twenty-four nonuremic patients served as a control group.

Amyloid deposition is an important cause of morbidity in long-term hemodialysis patients, but it has rarely been reported in the sternoclavicular joint, where the clinical picture may be consistent with an infection. The imaging features of one case are discussed. Biopsy with specific staining for the beta-2 microglobulin component of amyloid should be considered in the work up of a lesion of this joint in this clinical setting.

A 65-year-old man was admitted because of bleeding from gastric ulcer. A massive deposition of AL lambda type amyloid proteins in the gastric lesion was found. There were a few Bence-Jones (BJ) proteins in the urine, but serum M proteins and bone lesions were not found.
