Microbial fouling is a costly issue, which impacts a wide range of industries, such as healthcare, food processing, and construction industries, and improved strategies to reduce the impact of fouling are urgently required. Slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have recently been developed as a bioinspired approach to prevent antifouling. Here, we report the development of slippery, superhydrophilic surfaces by infusing roughened poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) substrates with phosphonium ionic liquids (PILs). These surfaces were capable of reducing viable bacterial adherence by and by >6 log cfu mL after 24 h under static conditions relative to control PVC. Furthermore, we report the potential of a series of asymmetric quaternary alkyl PILs with varying alkyl chain lengths (C-C) and counteranions to act as antimicrobial agents against both Gram +ve and Gram -ve bacteria and illustrate their potential as antimicrobial alternatives to traditional fluorinated lubricants commonly used in the synthesis of SLIPSs.

This article compares the rheological and tribological properties of three ionic liquids: Tributyl(methyl)phosphonium dimethyl phosphate 97%-MFCD, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate 97%-BMIMPF6, and 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate 98%-BMIMBF4. Their density and kinematic viscosity at 20 °C and 40 °C were investigated, and tribological tests were carried out at the same temperatures with ball-on-disc contact. The test materials were made of 100Cr6 steel.

This study focuses on two types of phosphonium cation-based ionic liquids (P-ILs) with different alkyl chains: triethylalkylphosphonium (P222R) and tributylalkylphosphonium (P444R) cations. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy showed that the translational motion of the ions accelerated with an increasing number of alkyl chains by coupling with their rotational motion in both P-ILs. Raman spectroscopy revealed that P222R cations, despite dielectric similarities to P444R cations, can form all-trans conformations and cation-rich nanodomains because they have a relatively polar, short alkyl chain moiety with a central P atom and less-polar alkyl chains than those of P444R cations.

Pesticides used in agriculture can contaminate foods like fruits and vegetables, posing health risks to consumers and highlighting the need for effective residue monitoring. This study explores aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) comprising phosphonium or ammonium ionic liquids (ILs) combined with ammonium sulfate as an alternative pre-treatment method for extracting and concentrating the pesticides clomazone, pyraclostrobin, and deltamethrin from strawberry samples. Liquid-liquid equilibrium measurements for each ATPS were conducted, followed by extraction experiments to determine the most efficient systems for pesticide extraction.

Municipal sewage sludge, a by-product of wastewater treatment plants, presents environmental challenges due to its complex composition. Particular concern is the lipophilic and aliphatic compounds that pose risks to the environment and human health. This study focuses on the efficient removal of those compounds from sewage sludge using several organic solvents (hexane, toluene, chloroform, dichloromethane, acetone, hexane-methanol mixture, ethanol, and methanol) and ionic liquids (ILs) like tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate by solvent extraction techniques.

A series of homoleptic rare earth (RE) complexes bearing phosphino-aryloxide ligands (, ) has been prepared. The complexes have been characterised using multinuclear NMR and IR spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis. Structural characterisation highlighted the different RE-P interactions as a result of differing Lewis acidity and ionic size across the series, hinting at the possibility of FLP-type activity.
