X-ray Responsive Antioxidant Drug-Free Hydrogel for Treatment of Radiation Skin Injury.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Medical Materials and Devices, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Radiation Medicine and Molecular Nuclear Medicine, Key Laboratory of Radiopharmacokinetics for Innovative Drugs, Tianjin Institutes of Health Science, Institute of Radiation Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Tianjin 300192, P. R. China.

Radiotherapy (RT) is widely applied in tumor therapy, but inevitable side effects, especially for skin radiation injury, are still a fatal problem and life-threatening challenge for tumor patients. The main components of topical radiation protection preparations currently available on the market are antioxidants, such as SOD, which are limited by their unstable activity and short duration of action, making it difficult to achieve the effects of radiation protection and skin radiation damage treatment. Therefore, we designed a drug-free antioxidant hydrogel patch with encapsulated bioactive epidermal growth factor (EGF) for the treatment of radiation skin injury.

Characterisation of the ocular inflammatory response to AAV reveals divergence by sex and age.

Mol Ther

January 2025

Academic Unit of Ophthalmology, Translational Health Sciences, University of Bristol, Bristol, BS8 1TD, UK; NIHR Biomedical Research Centre of Ophthalmology, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, EC1V 2PD, UK. Electronic address:

Progress for ocular AAV gene therapy has been hindered by AAV-induced inflammation, limiting dose escalation and long-term efficacy. Broadly, the extent of inflammatory responses alters with age and sex, yet these factors are poorly represented in pre-clinical development of ocular AAV gene therapies. Here, we combined clinical imaging, flow cytometry and bulk-sequencing of sorted microglia to interrogate the longitudinal inflammatory response following intravitreal delivery of AAV2 in young (3-month), middle aged (9-month) and old (18-month) Cx3cr1-creER:R26tdTomato+/- mice of both sexes.

Gout is a systemic metabolic disorder caused by elevated uric acid (UA) levels, affecting over 1% of the population. The most common complication of gout is gouty arthritis (GA), characterized by swelling, pain or tenderness in peripheral joints or bursae, which can lead to the formation of tophi. At present, western medicines like colchicine, febuxostat and allopurinol are the primary treatment strategy to alleviate pain and prevent flare-ups in patients with GA, but they have significant side effects and increased mortality risks.

Dynamic non-coding RNA biomarker reveals lung injury and repair induced by polystyrene nanoplastics.

Environ Int

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Environmental Medicine Engineering, Ministry of Education, School of Public Health, Southeast University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, 210009, China.

Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) are omnipresent in the air and can be inhaled by humans. However, their long-term adverse implications and toxicological mechanisms for human respiratory health are unclear. Therefore, this study aims to provide new insights into the pulmonary toxicity of PS-NPs using mice and organoid models.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), a crucial transcription factor, exerts a notable influence by hyperactivating or acquiring functional mutations in the occurrence and progression of cancers. Hyperactive STAT3 is also implicated in a range of hematopoietic malignancies, especially acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The function of STAT3 is associated with the phosphorylated parallel dimer structure, enabling them to stimulate the transcription of specific genes.
