Switchable materials play an invaluable role in signal processing and encryption of smart devices. The development of multifunctional materials that exhibit switching characteristics in multiple physical channels has attracted widespread attention. Now, two chiral thermochromic ferroelastic crystals (S-CTA) CuCl and (R-CTA) CuCl (CTA=3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium) have been prepared with switchable properties in dielectricity, conductivity, second harmonic generation (SHG), piezoelectricity, ferroelasticity, chiral, and thermochromic properties. Compared with traditional phase-transition materials with switching features, thermochromism brings additional spectral encryption possibilities for future information processing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first chiral thermochromic ferroelastic that exhibits switching properties in seven physical channels. This work is expected to promote further exploration of multifunctional molecular switchable materials.

Anti-counterfeiting technology plays an indispensable role in the high-tech field and various critical application areas. However, traditional anti-counterfeiting approaches currently in widespread use are too simplistic and easily replicated or forged, while advanced technologies with multiple anti-counterfeiting functions remain in the developmental stage. This study presents a novel multiple anti-counterfeiting technique.

Tunable and Switchable Thermochromism in Cholesteric Liquid Crystalline Elastomers.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, University of Colorado Boulder, Boulder, Colorado 80303, United States.

Thermochromic materials have found widespread commercial use in packaging as temperature indicators. Often, these products utilize leuco dyes that are mixed into conventional polymeric resins to prepare coatings or films that exhibit temperature-dependent color change. Here, we consider a distinctive approach to thermochromism via the selective reflection of liquid crystalline elastomers that retain the helicoidal structure of the cholesteric phase (CLCEs).

Multiresponsive Cylindrically Symmetric Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Elastomer Fibers Templated by Tubular Confinement.

Experimental Soft Matter Physics group, Department of Physics and Materials Science, University of Luxembourg, L-1511, Luxembourg, Luxembourg.

Cylindrically symmetric cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (CLCE) fibers templated by tubular confinement are reported, displaying mechanochromic, thermochromic, and thermomechanical responses. The synthesis inside a sacrificial tube secures radial orientation of the cholesteric helix, and the ground state retroreflection wavelength is easily tuned throughout the visible spectrum or into the near-infrared by varying the concentration of a chiral dopant. The fibers display continuous, repeatable, and quantitatively predictable mechanochromic response, reaching a blue shift of more than -220 nm for 180% elongation.
