Neurochemical Alterations Linked to Persistent COVID-19-Induced Anosmia: Probing Into Orbitofrontal Cortex by Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.

Acad Radiol

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, School of Medicine, Otorhinolaryngology Research Center, Guilan University of Medical Sciences, Rasht, Iran (M.H.D., S.N.). Electronic address:

Background: While many COVID-19-induced anosmia patients recover their sense of smell within a few months, a substantial number of them continue to experience olfactory impairment. In our primary study, the metabolic patterns in orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) were observed to exhibit more alterations than other regions. Hence, this study specifically probes into alterations within OFC region in subjects with persistent COVID-19-induced anosmia.

Humans without a sense of smell breathe differently.

Nat Commun

October 2024

The Azrieli National Institute for Human Brain Imaging and Research, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel.

Article Synopsis
  • Olfaction may seem limited in influencing human behavior, but losing the sense of smell (anosmia) can lead to serious negative effects, including a shorter lifespan.
  • The study investigates how anosmia affects nasal airflow patterns using a wearable device that tracks breathing over 24 hours in individuals with and without anosmia.
  • Findings show that airflow patterns differ significantly in those with anosmia, which could explain some health and emotional issues linked to the condition, suggesting that altered breathing may be a bigger factor than just the inability to perceive smells.

Case report: An adolescent female with anosmic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, intellectual disability, and papillary thyroid carcinoma: heterozygous deletion of .

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

July 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Health Sciences University, Dr Sami Ulus Children's Health and Disease, Health Implementation and Research Center, Ankara, Türkiye.

Article Synopsis
  • Isolated hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) is linked to various molecular defects, with TCF12 identified as a new defect that can also serve as a cancer biomarker; its variants have recently been associated with HH in patients.
  • A 15-year-old female was referred for obesity and was found to have HH, along with an absence of menarche, anosmia, and thyroid abnormalities, including nodules that were later diagnosed as multicentric papillary thyroid carcinoma.
  • The study highlights that haploinsufficiency of the TCF12 gene is associated with anosmic HH and can result in diverse symptoms, such as intellectual disability and craniosynostosis, emphasizing the need for further research into

Background: Anosmia was one of the main symptoms of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). A psychiatric history ( depression) may be an independent contributor to the risk of COVID-19 diagnosis, and COVID-19 survivors appear to have an increased risk of neuropsychiatric sequelae (bidirectional association).

Aim: To compare the rate of psychiatric disorder among post-COVID patients without anosmia patients with persistent olfactory complaints.

The trilogy of human musk receptors: linking receptor activation, genotype, and sensory perception.

Chem Senses

January 2024

Fragrances S&T, Ingredients Research, Givaudan Schweiz AG, Kemptthal, Switzerland.

The scent of musk plays a unique role in the history of perfumery. Musk odorants comprise 6 diverse chemical classes and perception differences in strength and quality among human panelists have long puzzled the field of olfaction research. Three odorant receptors (OR) had recently been described for musk odorants: OR5AN1, OR1N2, and OR5A2.
