Published: July 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented challenges to healthcare systems, including the cancellation and then staged resumption of elective procedures. The orthopaedic trauma community has continued to provide care to patients with acute musculoskeletal injuries that cannot be delayed in all scenarios. This article summarizes and provides relevant information (orthopaedic trauma service, outpatient fracture clinic, inpatient surgery) to the practicing orthopaedic traumatologist on maximizing outcomes while limiting exposure during the pandemic. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:: Therapeutic Level V. See Instructions for Authors for a complete description of levels of evidence.

Uncontrollable non-compressible hemorrhage and traumatic infection have been major causes of mortality and disability in both civilian and military populations. A dressing designed for point-of-care control of non-compressible hemorrhage and prevention of traumatic infections represents an urgent medical need. Here, a novel self-gelling sponge OHN@ε-pL is developed, integrating N-succinimidyl ester oxidized hyaluronic acid (OHN) and ε-poly-L-lysine (ε-pL).

In the past two decades, record-breaking heat waves have caused an increasing number of heat-related deaths, including heatstroke, globally. Heatstroke is a life-threatening systemic condition characterized by a core body temperature >40°C and the subsequent development of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome. Lung injury is a well-documented complication of heatstroke and is usually the secondary cause of patient death.

Background: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced apoptosis of lung microvascular endothelial cells (ECs) is the main reason of lung edema and acute lung injury (ALI) in septic conditions. Telocytes (TCs) are a distinct type of interstitial cells found around the lung microvasculature, which may protect ECs through the release of shed vesicles. However, whether TCs protect against LPS-induced EC apoptosis and ALI has not been determined.

Background: Significant osseous defects or osteonecrosis, precipitated by open fractures, infections, or neoplastic conditions, represent infrequent yet critical medical conditions. The free vascularized fibular graft (FVFG) is a challenging but straightforward, reliable surgical intervention for the reconstruction of defects across various anatomical regions. This study aims to compare, quantify, and demonstrate the FVFG's versatility.

Background: While there have been significant advancements in recent years, complications following fixation for femoral neck fractures remain a concern. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the influence of polytrauma and additional fractures on the occurrence of complications in patients who underwent surgical fixation for femoral neck fractures. The study focused on analyzing patient demographics, comorbidities, fracture classifications, fixation methods, and the likelihood of experiencing post-operative complications, with a specific emphasis on the impact of polytrauma and additional fractures.
