The use of natural products as chemotherapeutic agents and tools for manipulation of apoptosis represent an attractive therapeutic concept. In this study, we investigated the anticancer activities of a combination of two natural compounds with different origin, hypericin (plant product) in its photoactive state and Manumycin A (yeast product) and explored the underlying mechanisms of their pro-apoptotic action using an oxaliplatin-resistant variant of human colon adenocarcinoma cell line HT-29-OxR as the experimental model. CCK-8 assay was performed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of the drugs. CalcuSyn software was used to identify the type of interaction between the two agents. BrdU incorporation assay and colony forming assay were performed to study the short- and long-term proliferation of cells. To evaluate the ability of the drug combination to induce apoptosis, PARP p85 fragment was detected using the ELISA method. Changes in apoptosis-related proteins were examined by immunoassays. Our results showed that a synergistic combination of photoactive hypericin and Manumycin A decreased viability, inhibited both short- and long-term cell proliferation, decreased levels of IAPs proteins (cIAP1, cIAP2, XIAP and survivin), induced an apoptotic PARP cleavage associated with decline in procaspase-3 level, promoted phagocytosis of cancer cells, and restored chemosensitivity to oxaliplatin.

Recently, photo-assisted electrocatalysis as an emerging catalytic approach that combines the technologies of photocatalysis and electrocatalysis has attracted great interest among researchers. Under this circumstance, the NiFe-LDH compounded with PbS based (PbS@NFHS) heterojunction with both photoactive and electrocatalytic properties was constructed for the first time through an ambient etching route and a subsequent low-temperature hydrothermal method. The as-prepared catalyst displayed a novel hierarchical 3D open structure based on nanosheets, which offered numerous electrochemically active sites, facilitated the swift diffusion of ions and enhanced both electrical conductivity and catalytic stability, thus significantly improving the catalytic performance.

Organic solar cells (OSCs) have recently achieved efficiencies of >20% in single-junction unit cells owing to rapid advancements in materials and device technologies. Large-area OSCs face several challenges that adversely affect their efficiency compared to small unit cells. These challenges include increased resistance loads derived from their larger dimensions, as well as limitations related to morphology, miscibility, and crystallinity.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive form of breast cancer defined by the lack of three key receptors: estrogen, progesterone, and HER2. This lack of receptors makes TNBC difficult to treat with hormone therapy or drugs, and so it is characterised by a poor prognosis compared to other kinds of breast cancer. This study explores photoactive Poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles as a potential therapeutic strategy for TNBC.

Combining energy harvesting with energy storage systems in a single device could offer great advantages for continuous power supply in both indoor and outdoor electric applications. In this work, we demonstrate a photochargeable sodium-ion battery (PSIB) based on a photoactive cathode of two-dimensional crystals of MoSe. This photocathode enables spontaneous photodriven charging of a sodium-ion battery cathode under illumination and an increase in the reversible capacity to 29% at 600 mA g compared to that under dark conditions during galvanostatic cycling.

Finely Tailored Conjugated Small Molecular Nanoparticles for Near-Infrared Biomedical Applications.

Research (Wash D C)

January 2025

Frontiers Science Center for Flexible Electronics (FSCFE) & Institute of Flexible Electronics (IFE), Northwestern Polytechnical University, Xi'an 710072, P. R. China.

Near-infrared (NIR) phototheranostics (PTs) show higher tissue penetration depth, signal-to-noise ratio, and better biosafety than PTs in the ultraviolet and visible regions. However, their further advancement is severely hindered by poor performances and short-wavelength absorptions/emissions of PT agents. Among reported PT agents, conjugated small molecular nanoparticles (CSMNs) prepared from D-A-typed photoactive conjugated small molecules (CSMs) have greatly mediated this deadlock by their high photostability, distinct chemical structure, tunable absorption, intrinsic multifunctionality, and favorable biocompatibility, which endows CSMNs with more possibilities in biological applications.
