Taste and smell disorders (TSDs) can induce diminished interest in food, inadequate nutrient intake, and emotional irregularities, particularly among cancer patients. Previous research found that the main culprits of TSD development in cancer patients are cytotoxic drugs such as taxol, fluorouracil, cyclophosphamide, and anthracycline-based drugs. The advent of targeted drugs such as vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGFR-TKIs) has significantly extended the survival time of cancer patients, and thus widely used in clinical practice.

Background: In 2% to 4% of patients, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) chemosensory dysfunction (CSD) persists beyond 6 months, accounting for up to 4 million people in the United States. The predictors of persistence and recovery require further exploration.

Objective: We sought to define the predictors of recovery and assess the quality of CSD in registry subjects with self-reported persistent smell and taste dysfunction after COVID-19.

Previous data regarding chemotherapy-induced olfactory and gustatory dysfunction (CIOGD) are heterogeneous due to inconsistent study designs and small numbers of patients. To provide consistent, reliable data, we conducted a cohort study using standardized testing.
