The investigation on tandem addition/cyclization reactions of β-(2-aminophenyl)-α,β-ynones with aryl isocyanates/benzoyl isothiocyanate is reported. Experimental results show the suitable conditions to selectively direct the reaction outcome towards the product of 6-exo-dig N-, O-, or S-annulation of the in situ generated alkynyl urea/thiourea intermediate. The reaction of a variety of β-(2-aminophenyl)-α,β-ynones with aryl isocyanates/benzoyl isothiocyanate led to the selective formation of quinazoline or benzoxazine/benzothiazine derivatives, respectively. Density functional theory calculations provide a plausible rationale for the reaction outcome.

The auxin-inducible degron (AID) system is widely used to study function of various proteins. The plant hormone auxin is used as an inducer in this system, which easily penetrates into the cells and causes proteasomal degradation of the protein of interest fused to a small degron tag. It is often assumed that as a plant hormone, auxin does not significantly affect physiology of animal cells.

Stereocontrolled construction of tetrasubstituted olefins has been an attractive issue yet remains challenging for synthetic chemists. In this manuscript, alkynyl selenides, when treated with ArBCl, are subject to an exclusive 1,1-carboboration, affording tetrasubstituted alkenes with excellent levels of E-selectivity. Detailed mechanistic studies, supported by DFT calculations, elucidates the role of selenium in this 1,1-addition process.

Developing efficient strategies for the deoxygenative functionalization of carbonyl compounds is crucial for enhancing the effective utilization of biomass and the upgrading of chemical feedstocks. In this study, we present an elegant cathodic reduction strategy that enables a tandem alkylation/dearomatization reaction between quinoline derivatives and aryl aldehydes/ketones in a one-pot process. Our approach can be executed via two distinct paths: the aluminum (Al)-facilitated spin-center shift (SCS) path and the Al-facilitated direct deoxygenation path.

Dioxane lignin (DL) is isolated from plant material under mild acidolysis conditions and is widely used in many studies as a representative sample of protolignin, an alternative to milled wood lignin (MWL). However, the structural changes caused by hydrolytic degradation reactions during DL extraction are still poorly understood. In this work, an integrated approach based on 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to establish the features of the lignin structure on the example of pine lignin isolated using dioxane under various conditions: MWL, DL and "formaldehyde stabilized" lignin (LSF).

As the volume of plastic waste from electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) continues to rise, a significant portion is disposed of in the environment, with only a small fraction being recycled. Both disposal and recycling pose unknown health risks that require immediate attention. Existing knowledge of WEEE plastic toxicity is limited and mostly relies on epidemiological data and association studies, with few insights into the underlying toxicity mechanisms.
