Background: Headache and Neurological Deficits with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Lymphocytosis (HaNDL) is an increasingly recognised syndrome but the aetiology remains unclear. HaNDL has striking clinical features similar to Familial Hemiplegic Migraine (FHM), commonly related to gene mutations encoding the P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channel (VGCC).

Case Report: We report a case of HaNDL associated with high P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channel antibodies. Extensive investigations excluded alternative diagnoses and CSF lymphocytosis resolved within 3 months. The case was complicated by raised intracranial pressure resulting in an enlarged blind spot, papilloedema and bilateral lateral rectus palsies.

Conclusion: This novel association of P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channel antibodies with HaNDL has implications for the pathology of HaNDL and spectrum of voltage-gated calcium channel-antibody disorders. We compare the clinical features of FHM and HaNDL and the potential pathological role of these antibodies. This case also highlights that raised intracranial pressure is a common feature of HaNDL, rarely resulting in serious complications.

Background: Familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) types 1-3 are associated with protein-altering genetic variants in , and , respectively. These genes have also been linked to epilepsy. Previous studies primarily focused on phenotypes, examining genetic variants in individuals with characteristic FHM symptoms.

Cholinergic tone is elevated in obstructive lung conditions such as COPD and asthma, but the cellular mechanisms underlying cholinergic contractions of airway smooth muscle (ASM) are still unclear. Some studies report an important role for L-type Ca channels (LTCC) and Ano1 Ca-activated Cl™ channels (CACC) in these responses, but others dispute their importance. Cholinergic contractions of ASM involve activation of M3Rs, however stimulation of M2Rs exerts a profound hypersensitisation of these responses.

Background: αδ proteins regulate membrane trafficking and biophysical properties of voltage-gated calcium channels. Moreover, they modulate axonal wiring, synapse formation, and trans-synaptic signaling. Several rare missense variants in CACNA2D1 (coding for αδ-1) and CACNA2D3 (coding for αδ-3) genes were identified in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Peptide Lv and Angiogenesis: A Newly Discovered Angiogenic Peptide.

Peptide Lv is a small endogenous secretory peptide with ~40 amino acids and is highly conserved among certain several species. While it was first discovered that it augments L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (LTCCs) in neurons, thus it was named peptide "Lv", it can bind to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) and has VEGF-like activities, including eliciting vasodilation and promoting angiogenesis. Not only does peptide Lv augment LTCCs in neurons and cardiomyocytes, but it also promotes the expression of intermediate-conductance K channels (K3.

Endoplasmic Reticulum Calcium Signaling in Hippocampal Neurons.

Department of Biophysics of Ion Channels, Bogomoletz Institute of Physiology, NAS of Ukraine, 01024 Kyiv, Ukraine.

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a key organelle in cellular homeostasis, regulating calcium levels and coordinating protein synthesis and folding. In neurons, the ER forms interconnected sheets and tubules that facilitate the propagation of calcium-based signals. Calcium plays a central role in the modulation and regulation of numerous functions in excitable cells.
